slurredprey: isn't it possible to preserve games even if there's DRM? i think pirates mod the games with DRM to remove it. pretty sure exclusives on subscription services will be the only games we can't preserve.
Technically if you preserve the authentication method I guess but basically no. DRM is meant to make the software unplayable unless it gets some authentication to bypass the DRM and allow the user to access the software. The point of DRM is to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the software so "preserving it" in a copy would be silly. Its why pirates remove DRM in their cracks and why some devs remove the DRM from their games once it gets cracked by pirates.
neumi5694: That much is clear, it was just about Valve vs Microsoft. When it comes to preservation, Valve is bad, Microsoft is worse. Microsoft tried to replace Steam for a long time now. But currently - if I had to chose between Valve and Microsoft, I would buy on Steam, because of the encrypted files.
I bought one game in the MS Windows Store that got delisted sometime later and it can't be installed anymore. I still have it on my HD, but can't create a backup of it without decrypting the directories first.
Anothe free game (Prince of Persia classic collection) also got delisted. It had the option to upgrade to a add free version, but when I tried, I was told that was not possible. It also got delisted. Same stories, backups are only possible with some effort (and of course there's always adds that can't be removed).
True. I dont want to come off as a Microsoft defender because Im not. Their monopoly of OS and basically requiring everyone to use Office to work a corporate job honestly sucks and I was rooting for Google Docs to be a decent alternative. Microsoft is not a friend to the consumer. However, Valve has carefully created a "good guy" persona which is BS and hate the passes they get because they are "good guy Valve" and Valve cares about gamers.
Corporations duking it out though usually results in good deals for the customers because the corps are fighting for them (Uber vs Lyft/other ridesharing services and the lower ridesharing prices, Netflix vs Streaming and the lower prices at the time). Its once the market has settled to a few players do they begin to screw the customer so Im always for good competition.
