At this point I'm in favor of smacking indie devs on the head with a copy of The Art of Point & Click Adventure Games until they get a clue.

Wow, what an interesting book! But you can only buy that there?

I really like those old pixel things. The decisive difference to today: Back then, the talented graphic designers went to the limits of what was possible to create something wonderful with the limited pixel resources. Today, pixels are often (not always!) an emergency solution for a budget that is too small and a lack of talent. :(
