However, this is a moot point, as the game page clearly states: "Works on: Windows (7, 8, 10)"
Thanks amok, must have missed that:)
Little update from 30th November, via Twitter:

"Back in March, we released a render of the Scavenger created for the Gothic Remake.
Today we're bringing you a sneak peak of our interpretation of the Minecrawler.

Generally, we are very pleased to share that the development of the Gothic Remake is progressing on all fronts. We have assembled a team of over 35 specialized developers at our Barcelona office and are working with several contractors and outsources in addition. Gothic may be more than 20 years old, but the scope of this game cannot be underestimated."

The developer, Alkimia Interactive is still looking for people to fill several open positions at the Barcelona office:

On a related note - while checking on the progress of the Gothic Reloaded Mod (Wishlist entry) I noticed this thread on the official Gothic Reloaded Mod forum.
OP (a fellow GoG enthusiast it looks like) is asking if the devs had any interest to host/distribute the finished mod on GoG as well, as is already the case with The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos, which releases next Friday, I believe.

Judging from the main dev's replies, they see the definite potential in a GoG release (wider reach, more exposure, also boosting the sales of the required base game in the process, which THQNordic wouldn't mind at all, I assume) but are unsure about the additional effort/maintenance a GoG build/version of the mod would entail.

OP already suggested to ask The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos devs about the technical side of things (since they're about to release a Gothic mod/total conversion on GoG) and especially about how they ended up on GoG in the first place, but maybe someone from GoG's BizDev department could try to get in contact with and directly clarify things with them as well?

The person to contact would be one Pierre Beckmann (going by the handle "ThielHater").
The discontinued guest book on the Gothic Reloaded Mod website (https://www.gothic-reloaded-mod.de/?page=guestbook) contains several email addresses (including one with his real name on a well-known and long running email service starting with "y") under which he most probably still can be reached.
Not entirely "new" news anymore, but in case you missed it:

"Barcelona, Spain / Austria, Vienna, August 12th, 2022: Alkimia Interactive from Barcelona, Spain is working hard to bring back one of the most iconic RPGs of all time: Gothic is getting a remake, coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X.

Watch the Old Mine trailer: https://youtu.be/Rf4Wd29mRqw

The latest trailer takes you into the darkness of the Old Mine, where diggers trying to mine without becoming a snack for the minecrawlers, giant and ferocious creatures, lurking in the shadows."

"Responsible for Gothic Remake, studio Alkimia Interactive announced today on Twitter, that the game's soundtrack will be composed by Kai Rosenkranz - creator of the soundtrack for the original trilogy from Piranha Bytes and the first Risen."
Welcome to the Old Camp

"Welcome to the Old Camp in the Valley of Mines. Take a stroll through the camp, meet friendly locals, or go sightseeing. The Arena is said to be especially lovely at this time of the year!"

Well, one can certainly expand their vocabulary here. ô.O
If this doesn't fall victim to the whole "updating for modern audiences and sensibilities" lunacy I might actually pick this up.
Some actual gameplay and even more importantly, some samples of the German VO would be nice too.

timppu: Which reminds me... did the game have female NPCs? Somehow I think it should have had, but right now I can't remember any notable female NPCs in the game...
avatar
Leroux: See above. The only female NPCs around were scantily clad, submissive maids around the ruler of the old camp who were too afraid to talk. In Gothic 2 - which takes place outside of the prison area - female NPCs are regular citizens or even leaders (thief guild).

But the thing is that even though the main character is nameless, he is a fixed character. You don't really get to choose who he is, and G2 continues his story from G1. It's still the same guy who got thrown into prison with the other males, a gender choice would not make sense. It's like asking why you can't play a female Geralt in The Witcher series. Theoretically, I guess it would be possible (see Shepard in Mass Effect), but it's not how the main character was imagined, not fitting with the setting or the story as they were originally meant to be.
I've pondered about what you said above for the past two years or so, and today the solution finally occurred to me.

In the beginning of Gothic 1 (be it the remake in this case) when you meet Diego, the first thing Diego mentions is the clinic just around the corner where you can change your gender to whatever you want. Every modern prison should have one. There the player can decide their gender at the very beginning of the game, regardless of the protagonist being a "man" when thrown into the prison.

Problem, and gender, solved!

That overcrowded den of hyper-active, unnaturally violent, Hollywood-style fantasy "thugs" does not even remotely resemble the Old Camp.

***

Any commercial attempts to tamper with the series are destined to be a failure.

At some point in the future, when OpenGothic engine is ready, the fan community would organize to create faithful remakes of Gothic 1 and 2, as well as alternative, story-driven version of Gothic 3.
Gothic and follow up games have become quite stale, honestly.

I think I have enough after 20 years.

Why was a remake needed?

Bloody Spell also offers nice solutions by adding all sorts of discoverable items that change head size, gender you name it. They even include outfits ;p
Gorn, Lester, Milten and Diego appear to have not been either race- or gender-bent, isn't that something.
Could this actually turn out to be the first remake in years/over a decade even that 100% stays true and faithful to its original iteration as far as the depiction of the original socio-political/ideological structure is concerned?

An all-male penal colony set against a low-fantasy medieval backdrop where - naturally - the only few women are nothing but barter objects and additions to the de-facto ruling faction's leader's harem.

Niggles: Why was a remake needed?
Well, if they can remake it with quality, significantly improving the graphics while still preserving the spirit of the original, then count me in. For example, I'd love to see a remake of Clive Barker's Undying. I enjoy those games, but the graphics nowadays are really jarring. Resident Evil 2 had a great remake; it brought back childhood memories.
