I'm sure you've heard of it, but I always use gamefaqs.com. Just search for the game you are interested in. There are usually multiple faqs for popular games written by uber-dorks that have that kind of time. You just have to scroll through a long text file to find what you need.

By the way, new fangled 3D games with their own stereo sound ruin the effect entirely. A room packed with Dig Dug, DK Jr, Dragons Lair, Mr Dos Castle and others.... Like heaven.

A new video game store opened at my local mall a couple weeks ago. They only sell used video games. Anyway, they've got like 6 original arcade games in there. I brought my boys with me and my oldest wanted to play Samurai Showdown 2, but there were a bunch of kids crowded around it. So I told him "Back in my day you would put your quarter (or token) on the glass to tell them you are next". He didn't want to do it. I went on to tell him no words were spoken when this went down. It was "the code". The popular games like Mortal Kombat would have a line of quarters on the glass and everyone new who was next. I tried telling this to the girl at the register, and she just looked at me funny. Made me feel old. Also, we walked by Gamestop and it was empty haha.

I used to drain the quarter machine and resell them at a 25% mark up. 1.25 for 4 quarters. Fueled my habit. I was not a popular dude at the arcade.

The Tetris Grand Master series is one you could look for. It might be hard to find if you're not in Japan, and the game is not what I call easy, but it could be fun if you're willing to practice. (Note that reaching Grand Master rank takes years of practicing, and even the best players can't reliably beat the hardest mode of TGM3.)

If you think you are good at Tetris, this series will put you in your place.

What the hell was the movie of short horror films that had Emilio Esteves as the arcade junky? I remember when arcades really hit it big time there was, like with EVERY CRAZE ever of course, a lot of people convinced that it was bad for kids and possibly even very dangerous (looking at me it's obviously true), and this segment of the movie was all about that. The guy becomes so obsessed with this arcade game that he eventually becomes it.

Most arcade games were rather shallow! Just a short but hectic amusement ride. When you can keep inserting coins in MAME, the novelty wears off. Still, stuff like GOLDEN AXE, NIGHT SLASHERS, SPLATTERHOUSE or CADDILACS AND DINOSAURS were pretty fun!

Some of them stand out. CHIMERA BEAST is a pretty hectic game where you are a monster who steal DNA from enemies to evolve in the heat of battle.

I can really recommend the original twin-stick shooter ROBOTRON 2084. Hard as nails, but fair. Requires zen-like focus.
