Ema1337: Well i noticed that it is still in the beta but [..] Its not that iam not patient just that i paid 50€ for a game that i now downloaded three times and it just wont work, frustrating [..]
avatar
phaolo: Eh, indeed the choice to test an unfinished product on a popular expensive release wasn't one of the wisest..
Many normal users shouldn't even have seen it until it was complete.
I dont think you got what i wanted to say... I did not just only use the "galaxy" client i aswell downloaded it via the downloader and the files via web browser and none of these worked. My anger is not about an unfinished beta client plus i dont see where it should be my mistake if iam advised directly above the game to "discover Galaxy the new Client to download, play and update my games!"

So was it not wise when VALVe released Steam to the public to download with Half-Life 2 back in 2004? Half-Life 2 I have no idea how expensive it was to develop, but it is a popular video game.

Ema1337: Iam contacting their support right now, hopefully they'll help. I got that the client is still in an very early phase but they shoud just point that out clearly and dont encourage you to use it (by saying that the downloader wont get any further support which made me think that the client would be the better tool) without telling you that it is more for their development than for your own good :D If it would have been just the client that didnt work i wouldnt have been that harsh but trying three different methods of downloading the game that wouldnt work just made me loose it for a moment.
While I can understand why GOG wanted to have at least a beta version of Galaxy available when they released The Witcher 3, I personally think it was a huge mistake. I think they're going to drive away more people from Galaxy than entice people to use it due to its bugginess. People are excited to play Witcher 3 and don't want to have a crappy install/play experience due to buggy software. It's a shame, as they should have just kept Galaxy back in closed beta for as long as it took to get its functionality cleaned up.

Ema1337: edit: I would still use galaxy over origin :D And aswell I am not a steam fanboy but on the other hand steam is running pretty well right now and i never had problems with it in the last years.
My personal experience with Origin is it's pretty unintrusive and overall works as well as (perhaps even better than) Steam.

Just a couple things: are you sure you have enough space on the drive where you want to install the game? Are you sure you had all the files required (there are 8 of them and now a recent patch, so nine), if DLing through the browser? And did you have all the files in the same folder when you went to install the game?

True, rushing the open beta just damaged both Galaxy and TW3.
There were already many known problems with the client.
Ideally, GOG should have finished Galaxy before TW3, but at this point they should have waited more.

It's not the same situation.
GOG nowadays is competing with a fully functional widespread client.
Some users will revert immediately to Steam at the minimum annoyance.

Thanks for making me laugh, by saying Steam is a fully functional client.

Steam has been freezing for me at the store page every once in a while for like 5 months now and has been getting disconnected a lot for over 1 year now.

VALVe is earning all this money from having video games sold on Steam and they don't even care to spend any money to upgrade their servers or customer support.

GOG has these same issues way more often even though they have only a small percentage of the users that Steam has.
Now I'm sure you've managed datacenters with more than 8 million concurrent users without any problems, but cut the guys some slack.
Not everyone is as smart as you are.

Is that error common? (sorry, I don't use it)
Anyway, Valve already has many users tied to its client, and I doubt they'll abandon a sometime-freezing known Steam for a broken unknown Galaxy.

I never said other people are smarter than me.

I never managed servers with millions of people or tens of millions of people, but all the money VALVe is earning they need to upgrade their servers.

I experience issues with gog.com as well, but since 2011 on gog.com I have not experienced so many issues so many times a year like I did on Steam in the last 3 years.

Well I've had more 502s, 404s, "We're so popular"s and other errors in the last month on GOG than I've had in the past seven years with Steam.
And that's just the errors.

I will 1 up you I have had more problems with Steam than gog.com and you have had combined for the 10 years coming up on 11 years I have been using Steam.

In 2004 to 2005 Steam was very horrible. Lot of download fails. Now it's disconnections and store pages freezing.

Nope, no issues. Might just be because we have better internet.
Still, compared to Steam the client, infrastructure and development team of GOG are horrible.
But hey, no DRM.

I have good internet, but I know for sure I do not have internet as good as most of you Europeans do.

I get anywhere from 10MBPS to 50MBPS I am on cable no fiber optic and sometimes my Internet Service Provider (ISP) puts a 300GB monthly data cap on me.

Oooh that sucks, I could live with a slower connection but never with data caps.
Unfortunately that's the standard now for mobile internet (at least over here) and if they thought they could get away with it our ISPs would also do that.
And they still might.

In the United Stats of America the Internet Service Providers (ISP's) can get away with almost anything. They are a monopoly so far. Monopolies are illegal in the United States of America, yet my government does not care to do anything. The only good thing my government so far did is make net neutrality illegal.
