Just a thought.

Censorship and such is a big hot topic lately in games. I personally would like to see censorship in games go away and I think GOG can help with that. Why? Because you guys have proven yourselves to gamers, and you have a strong "This is how we do things and we do it for games and gamers" attidue.

Now I dont mean "I want boobies!" although nudity, sex and so on is a part of it. But I also mean little things deemed "offensive to americans" like sexuality references and so on need to just go away. Even tiny things like religious artifacts, homosexual references, or in the case of the new fire emblem games something as silly as petting a character has been censored for americans. I find it infuriating that violence is acceptable but sexuality isnt, or a developers desire to explore anything other than mainstream acceptable subjects. Even some games like Hatred which I had no desire to play still took a lot of flack over its extreme violence.

I want a world where we can push past sex, nudity and so on. Someone who will push that and open the flood gates to allow more of it to be released. I want to see that wall broken of AO games so we can see games flourish even more, allow more developers more freedom, let new games be released with new topics and new subjects. Ratings and public acceptance do nothing but hinder creative games because they act as a barrier on what someone can or cant do. And I dont want barriers, I want creative freedom.

But like how everything in this world starts, it starts small. We just need a few publishers willing to open the door for others and it will grow from there. No one is willing right now because they will catch flack from americans that have too much free time and feel the need to force their ideas of right and wrong on others. No mainstream, million dollar publisher will do this. It needs to be the little guys that dont need to appeal to stock holders or board members, once they do it and show it makes money then others will be willing to take the risk.

Once we get the taboo side of AO games out of the way then we can see more mature (not necessarily sexual kind of mature) and more thought provoking games coming out.

Picture tv before the simpsons, simpsons opened the door for southpark, southpark opened the door for family guy and so on. Now we have primetime tv where they make rape ane dead fetus jokes. Without the simpsons and southpark we wouldnt have that. But that also allowed for shows like hannibal and so on that are more adult and cerebral. Or how elvis gyrating his hips on national tv helped bring rock n roll more mainstream and broke boundaries. Or Maus the comic book won the pulitzer and made comic books more than 'comic books" and is now read in college literature courses. Games are on the brink of being opened more just like those other genres of entertainment, it just needs support to get over that hump.
Well, we have Lula here so that's a good start right? Even though it's hard to explain to the GF that it's a business sim...

Don't get me wrong, I like Family Guy (never really was too bothered about South Park) but I'm not entirely sure that the idea of prime time tv joking about rape and dead fetus is actually a good thing...

As for censorship in games... couldn't really care less. It's mostly sex and nudity, and while I get the whole "why are we allowed to see violence but not sex" argument I personally don't want sex in the games I play.
For one, I tend to play games while sitting beside my girlfriend, and it's a little awkward if suddenly the characters get naked and get it on... and that's aside from the possibilities for upset and argument inherent in such a situation..
And two I really don't care about having nudity in games. I play games to enjoy myself, to distract from reality in some kind of challenge or story and to me that doesn't include watching polygons have simulated sex.
I dislike unnecessary sex scenes in books for the same reason; if I wanted erotica or porn I would buy/watch/read that.

Smaller things like changing references or dialogue.. again, meh. As long as the story and dialogue I get is interesting and entertaining I don't really care if the original version was 'edgier' or something.
When they localise Japanese RPGs and increase the ages of the female characters I'm all in favour of that (not that it helps when they still look like children) because having in depth love stories centred on children is just weird.
Recent events have shown me that, yes, GOG is really big on helping censorship.
