ElTerprise: Valérian and Laureline - Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières
avatar
Potzato: A hundred times that. I don't know if Mézières has the fame he deserves outside French speaking circles. That is a really great series.

Otherwise I have to mention 'De cape et de crocs' as a great story. But I fear that's a pleasure reserved to a French speaking audience, as I don't think it could be well translated (lest it would be a massacre of alexandrines)

Edit : I must be dreaming, I thought I saw an hippo in this thread (one with good tastes at that :-)
It looks like the Valerian title is available here under The City of Shifting Waters. There's a bit of fuss that the artwork isn't reproduced as well as it could be (from the comments), which is unfortunate but at least it's available.

The other book you mention doesn't look like it has an english translation.

I forgot (because it's been a number of years now) about this french comic I quite enjoyed called Skydolls. I had hoped they would translate the rest of the story arc into another volume but sadly I think they just dropped it. The artwork was unique and the story, intelligent.
Carl Barks and Don Rosas comics about Donald and Scrooge McDuck (if they count?) is something I'll never get tired of! They may be considered a bit childish by some hardcore comic readers but I find them amazing, a favorite is The Dream of a Lifetime.

Otherwise I really like Tintin, The Seven Crystal Balls story was creepy as fuck.
The Legend of Mother Sarah

Do you like sublime line work, even better than Akira? Do you like post-apocalyptic, with desolate wastelands and marauders and people in lots of rags, a believable but totally changed Earth? Do you like it dark but without gratuitously placed over-the-top gore and with a good epic plot instead, a plot that has purpose? How about a female lead character who isn't a middle school kid in underpants but is convincingly badass, like Ripley from Alien?

The only downside is that the series was canceled after 7 volumes, there's no other series I would have wanted to go on more than this one. Ah well, what is there is definitely worth checking out. If you're into Mad Max / Fallout etc kinda stuff, get your fill here.
I rarely read comics nowadays. When I did I usually read Italian and French/Belgian. Dylan Dog, Alan Ford, Zagor, Il Grande Blek (known as Blek Stena in former Yugoslavia), Cocco Bill (comic books are better than a cartoon), Tin Tin, Gaston, Iznogud, Lucky Luke, Asterix, Marsipullami... And we had our own Cat Claw, and the Croatian [url=https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%BDarko_Beker]Zaviša. :) Enki Bilal is from these lands too, but he is done all of his work in France/French. Other than that Modesty Blaise, Corto Maltese and many others. I remember recently reading a funky Sherlock Holmes adaption. It has more of Euro vibe than 'murrican. :)

Out of American comics... I read Rip Kirby, Phantom, Dick Tracy, Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes. And others I can't remember ATM. I didn't even have a contact with Marvel/DC until much later. I think they weren't translated at all at the time. Which is strange because Yugoslavia was, with a constantly decreasing resistance, importing U.S culture since Tito-Stalin conflict in the 50's with the culmination in the 80's (80's being the first decade of my life). Only thing Marvel I remember reading was Silver Surfer.

ElTerprise: The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec - Jacques Tardi
(i actually really like pretty much everything from Tardi)

Well iirc they more or less adapted the first book with some changes like the sister....the movie was quite enjoyable imho.
But the comic series is better ;) (still waiting for the tenth book)...

BTW: You mentioned Enki Bilal. I really liked the Nikopol Trilogy :).
It's slightly old, but I just discovered Dynamite's Legenderry series and its recent spinoff books. Vampirella, Red Sonja, the Bionic Man, the Phantom, Flash Gordon, Zorro, Green Hornet, plus a few other pulp heroes and villains together in the same steampunk universe, written by Bill Willingham, art by Sergio Fernandez Davila. Surprisingly fun book.

It doesn't seem to be translated to my language. I see there is an English translation but unfortunately probably not in digital format. My French is to bad to consider the French version. :)

What a pity....but apparently only the french is digitally available. I'd love to read it and other franco-belgian comic in their french original but my french is not good enough...:)
Thread title is an oxymoron.
Preacher
100 Bullets
Comics is not my thing, i only liked 3 of them:

Preacher (good to see that it's being mentioned here, great comic);

Y The last man

The Punisher (2004 series)
Chew is one of the best series I've read in a long time; going into it I expected it to be too over the top and while it was zany there was a good amount of suspense and pacing that kept things intense.
I've been reading a fair amount of 2000AD recently. Especially, I've been reading the Judge Dredd Case Files, a reprint of the entire series, starting from the beginning. There was a pretty dire run when it was handed over to a number of (now) big-name writers (Ennis, Millar, Morrison) who seemed to badly misunderstand the comic and character, but things seem back on track now; we're up to The Pit, with the next file coming out in England (I'll have to import it) later this year.

I'm glad to see someone mention Barks. He was a genius, and anyone who thinks "Only a Poor Old Man" or "Christmas for Shacktown" are "childish" ... well, you're entitled to your awful opinion, I guess.

Will Eisner's The Spirit is sort of hard to quantify. It's sort of a superhero comic, but doesn't read like one. I'm not sure what else to say about it.

Vertigo is part of DC, but since it's not superhero stuff, I guess I'll say that I've read some really good Hellblazer. It was apparently cancelled in 2013? Then they tried to make Constantine part of something called "The Dark Justice League," which I haven't read, but am going to assume was awful.

From Japan, "No Matter How I Look At It, It's You Guys Fault I'm Not Popular" (shortened to Watamote for reasons I assume make sense in the original Japanese) is an absolutely excruciating cringe comedy that sometimes borders on being physically painful to read. So that's ... good?

It hasn't been officially licensed, but it would be silly not to mention in a thread like this that my avatar comes from Nukoduke!, a basically plotless slice-of-life comedy about a slacker and his pet "nukos" (sort of human/cat hybrids). There isn't really much point to it, other than "small furry animals are cute," but that's fine with me.
Hey guys,

Currently I'm into Saga, just finished the third trade and starting the fourth.

After that I think I'll start going through Sandman.
