Potzato: A hundred times that. I don't know if Mézières has the fame he deserves outside French speaking circles. That is a really great series.
Otherwise I have to mention 'De cape et de crocs' as a great story. But I fear that's a pleasure reserved to a French speaking audience, as I don't think it could be well translated (lest it would be a massacre of alexandrines)
Edit : I must be dreaming, I thought I saw an hippo in this thread (one with good tastes at that :-)
It looks like the Valerian title is available here under The City of Shifting Waters. There's a bit of fuss that the artwork isn't reproduced as well as it could be (from the comments), which is unfortunate but at least it's available. The other book you mention doesn't look like it has an english translation.
I forgot (because it's been a number of years now) about this french comic I quite enjoyed called Skydolls. I had hoped they would translate the rest of the story arc into another volume but sadly I think they just dropped it. The artwork was unique and the story, intelligent.
