awalterj: Chances to win by default so far = 100% !
there is still time, i'm currently working on my application
I took a good look at that game recently. But the poor reviews kept me from buying it.
I would like to get a nice modern environment, turn-based strategy game with hexagons, for when I'm not playing Battle for Wesnoth. I just don't know if Battle Worlds: Kronos is it. I look forward to reading some more opinions about it.

Here, this may help you scratch that "get a new game" itch the next time:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_video_games

Best wishes.
I apologize in advance for the ramblings that follow, but you can't get an old veteran talking about his past battles, and not expect to get an earful... a mouthful...an eyeful??? No matter! I'M IN!!! +1

Heroes of Might and Magic 1+2+3+Chronicles: In all the battles stories remembered by the surviving inhabitants of the planet Enroth, my leadership is repeatedly praised. With my help Lord Ironfist and his knights managed to conqueror the continent, that would later be know as the Kingdom of Enroth. A shining beacon of prosperity and proof that nothing is mightier than a man's unwavering will. When old age inevitably took Lord Ironfist I helped his son Roland succeed to the throne over his brother. After that I left for the continent of Antagarich, where I fought battles with the brave human of Erathia, the elves of AvLee, the mages of Bracada, the barbarians of Krewlod and even the wild inhabitants of the marshlands of Tatalia. When the constant war started to sap the will of all peoples, against my warnings, their leaders sought to use ever more powerful and devastating artifacts. And so it was that when the ultimate weapons, Armageddon's Blade and the Sword of Frost clash for the first time the world of Enroth started to collapse. In a last effort on Enroth, I lead all those willing to listen to a new planet.

Heroes of Might and Magic 4: On the planet of Axeoth new heroes arose and with my help they built great kingdoms to rival those of old. I helped Lysander prove his worth as the right ruler of Palaedra, a successor kingdom to Erathia. Together with Tarnum, I helped a young barbarian chieftain unite all the surviving tribes and become the new Barbarian King. I helped two lovers reunite and by their actions become rulers of the new elven nation. I then spent time travelling with a young lady in her quest to become the most feared pirate. I even helped a lich best the plans of an all-powerful being known as the God of Death. My last actions were to help Emilia Nighthaven rebuild the great wizard nation. Unfortunately the immortal King, Gavin Magnus, reappeared. He was thought to have perished in the great desolation of Enroth, but now returned and with his mind shrouded by darkness he used magic to tear me from Axeoth and sent me away to the planet of Ashan.

Heroes of Might and Magic 5: On Ashan by fighting as commanding officer to the many great kingdoms, I managed to prove to each of them the powerful force that an united front can be. Under my tactical guidance their great alliance managed to wipe out the demonic plague that was spreading across the world of Ashan.

Disciples 2: Every once in a while I return to this battlefield to help another inexperienced Nosferatu develop, from a weakling, cowering in the back row hoping not to get targeted by ranged enemies, to an invincible powerhouse taking on the battle alone without the aid of additional units. I also love over-leveling Dark Lords, due to their extremely low requirements, and slowly forging them into the most powerful melee unit.

Chaos Overlords: I spent some time wreaking chaos in the corporate controlled future of 2050 using specialized gangs. The John Woo inspired Regulators(black suit, black tie, white shirt, twin pistol wielding) and the katana wielding Brothers of the Blade and Sisters of the Saber.

King's Bounty - The Legend: Making great use of my tactical advices, a young Paladin managed to complete a flawless campaign, avoiding any casualties.

Fallout Tactics: I recruited a team of rookies near Bunker Alpha, and trained them over the course of 22 missions. Under my leadership they managed to stop the robot army that was menacing the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the western coast.

Age of Wonders: I managed to win this campaign relying almost excursively on highly mobile guerilla groups of Halfling Lancers and Centaur Archers.

Gorky 17: As director of operations I oversaw and ensured the successful mission of group two, lead by Cole Sullivan.

Warlock Master of Arcane: For as much as I despise getting my hands dirty by conducting warfare on such low theatres as those STEAMing with DRM, I occasionally take part in the ongoing battle for Ardania, due to a very generous offer by King Rrat the XLII. An offer I just couldn't refuse.

Armageddon Empires: Currently I'm helping the Empire of Man achieve repeated victories in their battle against the remnant alien threat posed by the Xenopods and the Machine Empire, in the hope of totally annihilating them and reclaiming Earth from the apocalyptic wasteland it has been transformed into.

Battle Isle Platinum(includes Incubation): About a week ago, during a long insomnia fueled night, I started having flashbacks of my father battling horrible Scay'Ger abominations and the strife they caused him. I remembered that he never managed to finish the campaign. Luckily, a certain GOG organization, was sending reinforcements to that battlefield. Well... I was willing to pay the price, and it's now my responsibility to end that war, no matter the sacrifices required.

My battle experience speaks for itself, but ultimately, it falls to you to make the choice. You could choose to send a wet behind the ears rookie that might start complaining half way through the campaign when the missions become difficult... you could... but maybe you should send someone that will finish the fight that is assigned to him?

ddickinson: Fake scenario 1: I have no skill whatsoever when it comes to commanding military forces, but I know the right people and have the right connections, so I will just bribe and slime my way up the chain of command. This method seems to work for a lot of military leaders throughout history. :-)
Bribe & slime, haha yes that seems to work in many parts of the world as this map impressively shows:
http://uk.businessinsider.com/most-corrupt-countries-in-the-world-2014-12?r=US

Not in my company though. We only take the bribes, but none of the slime!

Btw: In German, we call this Vitamin B - the 'B' stands for "Beziehungen" which means connections so I guess one could say 'Vitamin C' in English.

avatar
ddickinson: Fake scenario 2: I still have those pictures of you with that exotic fish seller and I am not afraid to post them on the forum if I don't get the job. :-)
Seems an incomplete strategy to blackmail someone with pictures which they themselves already publicly shared in the exact place you're threatening to post them. That, and I can't for the love of life remember posting any pictures with fishmongers, exotic or non-exotic.

avatar
ddickinson: Fake scenario 3: I pass you my application form, which contains just one sentence: "I know where you live!".
You're supposed to use foreigner speak with these kind of implied threats. Like this: "I know where your house sleep!"

avatar
ddickinson: Actual reasons: I guess you wanted some written sentiment, but I am not that good at selling my services, mainly due to the fact I have never needed to do so. So instead I will list some reasons.

Reasons to hire me:

1. I have played way to many strategy games and have a wealth of experience commanding troops in the field. This ranges from small tactical troops, to large scale forces, and I have even commanded the finest soldiers the God-Emperor has to offer.
Sounds good, at this point I must admit I've never played a Warhammer game but I've been wanting to try Chaos Gate and Final Liberation so I voted on both wishlists. I especially like the soundtrack from Chaos Gate:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOXe0RfMHvo

avatar
ddickinson: 2. I am well adept with weaponry and melee combat, as you are already aware, I have my very own little armoury.
Yes, the legendary dickinson heirloom truncheon from WW1 which you'll smite miscreants with, I certainly remember. Plus as a farmer you're probably quite hardy, after all Swiss mercenaries of past centuries were mostly farmers who fought so well because they had crops to attend to so not much time for diddle-daddle silly skirmishing. Ran down everything with dense pike formations and then quickly looted whatever lay around and then went home before the wives could complain about anyone being too late for dinner. Going to war was kinda like vacation compared to farm work, and there was more phat loot so they were very motivated. Don't mess with farmers!

avatar
ddickinson: 3. I have a good knowledge of history, and especially military history. So I have good knowledge of the major wars and tactics throughout human history. Even the deadly blood filled massacre of the Swiss innovation of Liechtenstein. ;-)
Interestingly, the recent incident you're referring to wasn't the first time we caused them trouble. 30 years ago, a firing exercise of the Swiss Army started a large forest fire in neigboring Liechtenstein, and any fire in a tiny country like that is a serious matter because there isn't much space to begin with.
I can tell from personal experience that during live firing exercises, targets are occasionally missed. It's like wacky RNG in strategy games. Strange things can happen.

As for military history, did you know that English mercenaries once invaded Switzerland but were promptly given a beating by the locals. You're going to blame the defeat on the French who were working with the English in this campaign but at the end of the day it's a nice example of the common folk triumphing over fancy pro warriors.

You can read a summary of the events here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gugler

avatar
ddickinson: 4. I look good in full battle armour.
I thought Warhammer only had ugly male orks, wasn't aware that there are female characters as well, at least that's the impression I got from the table top setups I used to see on display at game stores.

avatar
ddickinson: 5. And finally, in case none of those reasons are acceptable: some sad puppy dog eyes so that you feel sorry for me and give me the job.
Ah, I love dogs so this would work on me privately but it would be disrespectful of me if I gave someone a job just because I felt sorry for them. I'm not the Salvation Army, got a reputable business to run, matters of life and death!

avatar
ddickinson: But on second thoughts, your comment about Commanders sitting behind the battlefield in command vehicle just watching the war would be no fun. So unless I can get my hands dirty and lead from the front, then I thick I will pass on the job.
I do get the impression you're more of a hands on person, perhaps you would enjoy Battle Isle Incubation instead. In that game you can control a small squad of soldiers and while the squad leader (Sergeant Bratt) is a guy, he is outranked by Captain Rachel Rutherford, the dark haired sniper lady who later gets promoted to Major. There's also another woman in the add-on mission pack, Sam Steele, and she fights with a chainsaw. So much for women being helpless in games, anyone who says that has never played Incubation. You would like it, I'm sure :)

avatar
Gede: I took a good look at that game recently. But the poor reviews kept me from buying it.
I've only played the game for a short bit so far but I can already say that some of the reviews are - as usual with new indie games - quite harsh. It's a well made game, only detracting factor being A) if someone really doesn't like hex TBS and B) the price tag - the latter being irrelevant if you can get the game for free in a giveaway :)

avatar
Gede: I would like to get a nice modern environment, turn-based strategy game with hexagons, for when I'm not playing Battle for Wesnoth. I just don't know if Battle Worlds: Kronos is it. I look forward to reading some more opinions about it.
I downloaded Battle of Wesnoth, looks like something I might enjoy so thanks for bringing my attention to it! Heard about it previously but never checked it out. As for Kronos, as I said I'm a bit too early into the game to make real conclusion but I can say that it's not at all a bad game and 3 stars seems an unfair verdict - so far.

Here are a couple TBS games you might enjoy:

Unity of Command: Stalingrad Campaign

I bought this a couple months ago but haven't tried it yet. But my intuition tells me that it's exactly my kinda game. Looks like it's challenging without being convoluted in terms of interface and mechanics, and the little tanks look cute just like in Advance Wars but here you have a WW2 setting which promises epic tank battles between Germans & Russians.

Steel Panthers series:

If you don't mind playing an older game, this is a classic. Especially Steel Panthers 2 which is known to be the best part. It would be great to see it on GOG, here is the wishlist with way too few votes:
http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/steel_panthers_ii_modern_battles

Panzer Corps: I haven't bough this yet but it looks very interesting, if it ever goes on sale I'm gonna grab this one for sure. Sadly not available on GOG.

And then there's the Dai Senryaku series which I've never played but would love to try out, after all the similar Advance Wars series is one of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately, Dai Senryaku is somewhat unknown here despite being one of the longest standing video game series of all times.

Thanks for that link, I only have Advanced Strategic Command and OpenTTD from all these, heard about a few others but never found the time, there sure is a lot of free stuff out there.

Are you talking about the base game of Incubation or the add-on missions? The add-on is brutal, it literally made me break a sweat from the tension. Without a quick save/quick load button these missions would be unplayable. Ammo is so tight and you're under extreme pressure not to waste any turns so whenever you miss a shot, it's pretty bad.
I don't think it's possible to iron man the add-on campaign, no chance in hell. Not sure if there's any game where I abused the quick load button so gratuitously.

You're the first contestant so regardless of which way things go props for that!

There are two main approaches one can take in this contest. One way is the way of entertainment and being resourceful and original, the other way is to remind the host that once the fun part (the giveaway) is over, the winner is left to actually play the game and with strategy games that usually is a serious matter relying more on qualifications like gaming experience and personal attributes like patience and persistence.

The interesting thing is that both approaches can lead to victory - the unknown variable being the host's mindset which is difficult to know if it's someone one hasn't talked to and potentially more confusing if one has talked to them :)
avatar
awalterj: Are you talking about the base game of Incubation or the add-on missions?
I'm not certain, but I would assume he was playing the base game.

I didn't mean for this to sound as entitlement, such as that I would be telling you to give me the game over other entrants, just because I had more free time to play video games. :)

My actual intention was to be ridiculous. I was trying to sound like an old veteran, that has seen some stuff in his life, so he's not here to fight for ideals, he just wants another mission. I was trying to make a speech that would be worthy of the follow-up: "I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one."[Apocalypse now]

And what makes you think these are pictures you have shared. How do you know I never had you followed and obtained some rather scandalous pictures of you while on one of your many travels. We wouldn't want these pictures to be made public now would we? They are so filthy they would make a whore blush. :-)

(Of course, I am only playing, I am not trying to imply anything, just having a bit of fun with the giveaway.)

Foreigner speak? You mean like this "Я знаю, где вы живете!", or this " Ah ken whaur ye bide!"? (That last one is super evil and foreign, it's thick Scottish-English, apparently) :-)

Warhammer Final Liberation is a very good game, one that I really enjoyed. It's a bit rough around the edges, and it's sadly not a complete game (it looks like they were planning to add several races, but in the end there were only two), but it's still fun to play. I played it a few months ago and still had lots of fun with it. My only complaints was that the Space Marines were way too weak (there was no real difference between them and regular Imperial Guard infantry) and the morale timer the games uses. I like to take my time with strategy games, not worry about a timer. It is a very good adaptation of the table top game onto a computer. Lots of fun, and the FMV cutscenes are great as well. I have the game on disc, but I know some "abandonware" sites have the game. It's a shame they can't/won't bring it here to GOG, but I guess it's another game in licensing limbo.

Those poor people of Liechtenstein. I always said that I thought you Swiss were up to something. I never believed your nation's stance on neutrality. You are just biding your time for the great Swiss invasion of Europe. :-)

You been chatting all this time with a "Battle Sister" and you did not know there were women in 40K? :-)

There are female characters for most nations, even Orks. My favourites, obviously, are the Adepta Sororitas, the Battle Sisters of the Imperium.

Battle Sister, Female Ork #1, and Female Ork #2.

Sniper is my all time favourite gun role, and having a lady sniper would indeed be cool. The female snipers of the Read Army during the Second World War were always an interesting read.

Awesome giveaway. +1

I'm tempted to apply, but there may be more experienced commanders available for this position. (ie. people with this on their wishlist)

I only have moderate experience as a space station administrator. I'm a qualified ninja. I was also the overlord of hell for a little while. Also I'm a very experienced giant robot pilot, with transferable skills. xD

Thank you awalterj. I'm in for "Battle Worlds: Kronos". It's been on my wish list for some time.

I'm not very good at writting job applications, so I'll just send in my resume.

Name: The Phandom
Surname: Of the Opera
Birth: unknown
Contact info: Secret room beneath the Opera.

Education
Primary: Empire Bay Elementary school
Secondary: Liberty city High school
Higher: College degree of archaeology by professor Henry Jones Jr.

Skills: DEX:24, STR:32, INT:20, WIS:28, CHA:12

Previous occupations:
Black Mesa scientific personnel. Reasons for quitting: Fear of train transportation.
Sarif Industries security personnel. Reasons for quitting: The new security chief is nuts!
Taxi driver in city of Lost Haven. Reasons for quitting: Constantly getting hijacked by Tommy, Sam and Paulie.

References unavailable because they were burned by Halloween Harry.

I took a look at the video, and it really looks neat! I'll put it into the "buy it when it is affordable".
I really like the hex game. I offered some resistence when I first saw one, but once I understood why it makes sense, I converted. Therefore, the only problem with Battle Worlds: Kronos is the price.

There are already some clever submissions, and I'm afraid I won't be able to write something up to their level. Furthermore, I already got a (very nice and entertaining) game from your previous giveaway. I don't want to feel like I'm riding on your "misfortune".

I had heard about Unity of Command as a "lighter" new Panzer General. I would like to take a good look at it some day.

I also have a GBA emulator on my cell phone, and I tried Advance Wars. I loved it! I'l thinking about getting a GBA or DS just because of it.

I'll take a look at the other games you mentioned. I hope that turn-based strategy games won't be seen as "obsolete" due to their real-time cusins.
- One day to go for entries -

The only thing that would make a whore blush is nice behavior because that's not what they expect. I'm a nice person, therefor I'd make them blush. So even if you had something on me, you have nothing on me!

avatar
ddickinson: Foreigner speak? You mean like this "Я знаю, где вы живете!", or this " Ah ken whaur ye bide!"? (That last one is super evil and foreign, it's thick Scottish-English, apparently) :-)
You must live close to the Wall seeing as you like to poke fun at the wildlings. It's a global tradition to joke about one's neighbors, a tradition we must all duly uphold.

I don't like timed missions, either. I like slowly turning the tide, unfortunately many RTS games throw in timed missions here and there, e.g. Red Alert & Stronghold. TBS games do the same thing by limiting the number of rounds you're allowed for some missions. Or they just make it impossible to win past a certain number of rounds because there is an endless stream of enemies and your ammo eventually runs out (Incubation)

I've only seen small downloads that most likely don't include the cutscenes :( Would buy if GOG gets it here.

avatar
ddickinson: Those poor people of Liechtenstein. I always said that I thought you Swiss were up to something. I never believed your nation's stance on neutrality. You are just biding your time for the great Swiss invasion of Europe. :-)
Hm...maybe we should. Then again, this year marks the 500 year anniversary of our last (and failed) attempt at invading other nations and since then it generally worked well for us to look after ourselves and not start crap abroad. I'm of the opinion that if anyone were to join anyone then the European Union should join Switzerland, not the other way around. It's not a humble or non-humble opinion, just a sensible one. Although we'd only accept those regions who have their act together. At the very least that would include Bavaria, Austria, Liechtenstein and Northern Italy - basically anyone who is able to pull their own weight. But the EU would never ever allow their best tax payers to go rogue so the only option is for us to stay out of the sour grape mafia that surrounds us and their constant attempts to drag us down to their level and overregulate everything to such a nonsensical degree that small businesses can hardly manage.

avatar
ddickinson: You been chatting all this time with a "Battle Sister" and you did not know there were women in 40K? :-)
I thought your forum tag referred to your badassness in RL, I didn't know it was a Warhammer reference.

Warhammer has got Butterface :O

avatar
ddickinson: Sniper is my all time favourite gun role, and having a lady sniper would indeed be cool. The female snipers of the Red Army during the Second World War were always an interesting read.
Sniping has this sneaky charm about it (in games) but all this lying around in uncomfortable positions for hours doesn't appeal to me, plus I'd get cold way too quickly due to low body fat. Naturally higher body fat gives women a notable advantage for sniping. I read about female combatants in various parts of the Red Army and of course they deserve recognition but I have the same respect for all those who were "just" cooks and nurses, sadly those weren't as respected by their male comrades - many of which behaved in ways that can't be called animalistic because that would be an insult to animals. Especially against the female population of the Germans, a war crime that has been swept under the table despite its monstrous proportions.

Having women in combat roles does wonders to dissolve patriarchal structures as can be observed right now in the struggle of the Kurds in defense of their homeland against ISIS. Before women took up arms and started fighting alongside the men, often outperforming them (because in this conflict women have even more to lose), Kurdish attitudes towards women were more traditional but now gender roles are changing.

bad_fur_day1: I'm tempted to apply, but there may be more experienced commanders available for this position. (ie. people with this on their wishlist)
No need to be shy, applying for a job is all about bullshitting as much as you can without lying, I think it's called marketing :)
Whether the game was on your wishlist or not isn't important, all that matter is how much you want it now.

avatar
bad_fur_day1: I only have moderate experience as a space station administrator. I'm a qualified ninja. I was also the overlord of hell for a little while. Also I'm a very experienced giant robot pilot, with transferable skills. xD
See, these are all good topics to riff off from. You could embellish on your various duties as space station administrator, maybe point out how particularly efficient your bio-deck was. As for qualified ninja, you could easily elaborate on that - otherwise people might think you were just hiding underneath cardboard boxes. Regarding your experience as robot pilot, maybe brag about how you customized and upgraded your robots, preferably in games like Mission Force: Cyberstorm but if it was just Mech Warrior then that's at least sci-fi.

Classic scene! I've already got a job but I'll keep this strategy in mind in case I interview for another job.
"Hi. I heard you're hiring niggers." Gets me every time :'D

Let me guess, you studied with Jones because of all the pretty ladies attending his courses! Since they couldn't all get their manicured fingers on him, you were surely able to pick off the remnants. Good strategic thinking.

avatar
phandom: Skills: DEX:24, STR:32, INT:20, WIS:28, CHA:12
Ideally, for battle commanders INT would be higher than DEX and WIS higher than STR, also CHA seems a bit low - you don't want your troops going HMS Bounty on you. But WIS 28 is quite high, and that is the most important stat.

avatar
phandom: Previous occupations:

I have fear of train prices so I can't at least partially empathize, I do love trains though.

avatar
phandom: Sarif Industries security personnel. Reasons for quitting: The new security chief is nuts!
Inter-personal problems are best left unmentioned, that way human resources won't be paranoid about you not getting along with staff on the new prospective job.

avatar
phandom: Taxi driver in city of Lost Haven. Reasons for quitting: Constantly getting hijacked by Tommy, Sam and Paulie.
Technically, we don't hire people with a criminal record but if you got hijacked multiple times that might have been a character building experience so it's not a bad point.

avatar
phandom: References unavailable because they were burned by Halloween Harry.
We don't need references here, we're just going to use our knowledge of human nature. Besides, you know how it is with references and people listing their cousins and whatnot...

I've only played one mission so far. It seems like a cool game but it hasn't got a hold over me yet. Had to invade Poland with a whole lot of tanks and infantry with funny oversized cabbage heads. Last year I invaded Poland for real without tanks and without supply lines etc and had more fun so I'm not quite sure why I need to play this game.

Gede: I also have a GBA emulator on my cell phone, and I tried Advance Wars. I loved it! I'l thinking about getting a GBA or DS just because of it.
Advance Wars is the most fun TBS game series imho. You can even install a NES/SNES emulator on the DS and play the old Famicom/Super Famicom Wars parts of the series.
