Tallima: I recently got Sacred 3 for the XBOX with Games With Gold and although the game is only fair, the into is super-awesome. It's a beautifully rendered action sequence of a group of heroes taking out group of bad guys and rescuing a girl.
For some reason I like action-packed intros which don't necessarily end well, or the supposed hero or good guy dies, or there are other sudden twists throughout the intro. It makes them less cliched I guess.

Mechwarrior 2

Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries

Descent Freespace

Mark of Chaos

Dawn of War

Dawn of War 2

Hellgate London

etc.

Elmofongo: For such a legendary CRPG it does give a terrible first impression with its intro cinematic. I mean what the hell is this cinematic is supposed to show me about the game?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoSqDtky0pU

Starts off with the Abyss quote from Nietzsche which I have no idea how it applies to the following scenes or the whole game in general.

Then some random guy appeares at the top of this tower who has a very dumb looking helmet. And then this Obviously evil character appears in evil looking armor and voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson in his bad guy voice.

"I will be the last" the last of what?

And then the other guy quotes "wait there are others I can show you" what are these 'others' are you talking about.

And then evil guy kills him and then the title logo "BALDUR'S GATE" appears.

The intro tells me nothing about the game. I mean this intro is certainly no Fallout 1 or Diablo 2 thats for sure :P
Another brilliant thread about something that he doesn't understand.

Elmofongo: Its been awhile since I have beaten the game.
Didn't you see the intro then, or why did it just now occur to you how you don't like the intro?

No I always felt this intro was rather lackluster for years now.

Elmofongo: Its just I grew up with Blizzard's Cinematics:

Grogger: Well to be fair that Blizzard cinematic, you grew up on, is about 2 years after Baldur's Gate. That's 2 Years at a time when both hardware and software were progressing in leaps and bounds, so it's a long 2 years at that as tech goes. Take the links you've given as an example, the difference in quality between Diablo 2 and LoD (even if you check one of the old LoD videos the newer effects are all still there), and that was only 1 year of progress in the industry. If the newer one at that time didn't look better it would be because they were lazy or didn't consider it worthwhile or important etc.

Then there's also taking into account how much resources/funding a company is going to put into the cinematics, what priority they give it, keeping in mind the scope of the game itself, Baldur's Gate 1 dwarfs Diablo 2.

Sure, visually it hasn't help up that well but that's completely understandable and expected, especially as you go back to points in time when advancements were coming fast and furious.

Anyway you started this thread decrying the events of the video, not the graphical quality (something you didn't mention, and again it was perfectly acceptable for the time), once the events were explained (such how it's being informative while also getting one to ask questions thus getting interested, in ways commonly used for a good trailer/into) you suddenly fall back onto a the logical fallacy of moving the goal posts and making it about the graphics quality.
Well its just that the topic of this thread is pretty much concluded by the time of Gr00t's last post.

So now my opinion on the Cinematic has changed thanks to people's corrections (albiet harshly)

Seeing that it is concluded I went to talk about just 3D Cinmatics in general since one guy mentioned the 3D cinematic of Dungeon Keeper 1.

GR00T: The intro tells you everything about the game/story. But like any g̶o̶o̶d̶ shitty prelude or intro, it only makes sense when you play the game and discover how the plot unfolds.
FTFY. Elmofongo is right for once, thank FSM. A good prelude fills you in on the immediate situation. Arcanum, Planescape: Torment, Fallout, Primordia, Invisible Inc., Necrodancer, both D&D Krynn games (too bad there never was a 3), Spider and Web, Star Wars, A Song of Ice and Fire all have good ones. The one is Baldur's Gate is dumb, and the extremely corny in its overuse Nietzsche quote cinches it.

There are actually 3 Krynn games: Champions, Death Knights, and Dark Queen. (Maybe you mean Dark Sun, but even then there was a third game; it's just that the 3rd game is a now-defunct MMO.)

My favorite RPG intros are those like the ones in the orignal Final Fantasy and the Original SaGa: You start up the game, see a bit of text, create your character(s), and are immediately in control of your party by the first time. No need to watch a cinematic before you get to actually play the game. Wizardry 4's intro was also good; you get one screen telling you the back story, and are then immediately in control of Werdna in a prison at the bottom of the dungeon.

I never had strong feelings about it except that the thing I always remember is how giggly Sarevok is.
