I always knew the book will be adapted again, I just never thought it wouldb e this soon. It's entirely unnecessary in my opinion, the movies are still great and there is no way this is going to be better. Sure, the movies are not perfect, there are some things I wish were slightly different, but in general I can't imagine LotR adapted better. The cast, the visual style, the mood, the music, it's all perfect. I really don't see a way to do it differently and better. And seeing what is predominant in TV shows today, it's probably going to end up with swearing, sex and far more violence... actually maybe they should just get John Boorman to make the infamous version he wanted to make back in the 80s :P

The real shame of it is that there's so much else that could be adapted instead of the book athat already has a great movie trilogy. There's so many fantasy books, comics even games. Just feels like a waste.

MaxFulvus: The Silmarillion or events during the Third Age may be interesting, but if it's just to watch interracial sex between dwarves and elves or non canon stories, no thanks.
The Children of Hurin would make for a pretty good dark fantasy movie. It's even got incest to satisfy the Game of Thrones fans!

Not interested, the LOTR franchise has been milked to death, enough is enough, no need to butcher Tolkien's work any further.
No, just no !
Give all rights to Peter Jackson and he can make a Middle Earth movie if he wants.
They already have one don't they? Jeremy clarkson as Sauron, Richard Hammond as the hobbit, may as Gandalf.

Anyways amazon, isn't that drm telly, it's killing all normal telly, this and Netflix, so just ignore it and hope it dies.

anothername: Meh...

Why not get a piece of the grimdark sexy pie and make a fantasy series based on Salvatores DoUrden books. Double benefit as sales platform: Crossover sales with tons of D&D books.
Or anything from Weis&Hickman would be great TVshows material ; their stories always have a great pacing with clearly identifiable chapters (read 'seasons'), and their settings are original (or at least have flavor).

What's the point? The Peter Jackson movies are still a powerful image in the audience's mind. They are well-loved and still do well when they are periodically shown on TV. No need to remake the story for at least one generation.

I am dying to see someone with the courage to produce a live action 100% original fantasy TV show (not based in any book). That would be something.

Stig79: One of the hobbits will be transgendered, another one will be black. Needs to be PC and in tone with 2017 "culture"
Don't forget that the Easterlings and Southrons will be portrayed as the good guys (because they're Arabs, duh) while Gondor will be the evil imperialists.
GOG needs to get in talks for Lord of the Rings game re-releases. :P (I'm sure they're always trying.)
I'm going to get dinged for this but it's too tempting. Please be gentle.

Here in America, we call that the news. :)

It will take place in Middle Earth, but it won't be anything from any of the books i.e newly made up stories for the show. Guarantee it.

And with a little help from Starmaker, as usual, we have hit rock bottom in less than two pages. I think it must be a record, having all of that happen with not a single thing about the show announced, it's very existance not even certain.

She can't even see my posts (muted) so I have no idea what this "both sides" crap is.

ANYWAY, in a perhaps helpless effort to get the thread back on course, as much crap as I give the movies, Middle Earth itself is brilliant and the possibilities of separate stories coming from there, and good ones, are limitless. In the right hands this could be AMAZING, but I was going over the Fall TV cancellations and noticed a few shows which bombed because while the idea was brilliant, sadly the execution was shit. Let's hope that doesn't happen here.
