darthspudius: I wouldn't even go that far. To be honest, I think it is a better game. Certainly not as dated. As much as I love System Shock 2 it is getting pretty archaic.
I have no opinion on the matter, not having played either System Shock myself. I was just pointing out that it is indeed possible to plagiarise oneself.

WAIT, WHAT?!? ARE YOU SAYING BIOSHOCK IS SIMILAR TO SYSTEM SHOCK BESIDES JUST IN NAME ALONE?

huh... now I'm a little more interested in Bioshock.

Ghostbreed: Is Bioshock based on, or losely based on a book? If so, which one?
Nah. It's just the developers recreating a world built with Ayn Rand's values and then letting you take part in a story in such a world.

To say it's similar to System Shock 2 is an understatement. It's pretty much a reskin of that game, albeit with dumbed down gameplay and a much more forgiving difficulty.

Here's an excerpt from Yahtzee Croshaw's review of BioShock:

"But that's the thing; it isn't like System Shock 2, it is System Shock 2. Oh, sure it looks different and it differs in the fine detailing and the character names are changed and shit, but once you strip all that out and the bad guy might as well be Shodan with a waist coat and a copy of Atlas Shrugged. The Psi Powers are now Plasmids, the Hybrids are now Splicers, and the wrench is now...well a wrench, but it's a different kind of wrench. Everything that was cyberpunk then is steampunk now and sometimes it gets a little bit hard to swallow. I wasn't aware that boiled water could form allegiances."

When I first saw that review, I thought he was being hyperbolic, but once I actually got to play System Shock 2, I realized just how accurate it was. Even the central story twist is the same; and the game utilizes the same baffling "two currencies" system (nanites and cyber-modules in SS2; dollars and ADAM in BS).

And in Infinite, the plasmids became Vigors.
