Didn't they announce plans to release a Star Wars movie every year when they bought the franchise, though? This shouldn't be a surprise.
Every year, yeah, but I didn't think that means every year forever. I'm not surprised there is going to be another trilogy, but I thought there'd be more time before that happens.
However, at least from the article, Johnson's saying all the right things (not Skywalker related, different part of the Galaxy, etc.) That's something I've personally wanted to see for a long time.
To me that depends on what it will be. Simply not being about Skywalkers and being set elsewhere doesn't really mean much. In fact, the next trilogy shifting away from the ongoing storyline (such as it is) only makes the current trilogy and the new characters feel even less interesting and more expendable to me than they already did.
The live action tv series sounds interesting though. At least that's something we haven't had from Star Wars yet.
I'm of a different mind about this and hold out little hope it will be anything good. Unless they plan on doing it as an intentional short run (4 or 5 seasons) like Breaking Bad.
Despite it's weaknesses and padding I liked Rebels, so if an animated show could be good, noreason to think they can't do as well with live action. They can, of course, also fail miserably. But at least it's going to be something new. Even if it's a train wreck, at least it will be interesting to see it derail.
