They really are going to bleed it dry, aren't they? I'm not exactly surprised, but I still hoped they'd be content with six or seven movies for now (Episodes VII-IX and the stand alone stuff) and let the franchise rest at least like five years. I feel like a new Star Wars trilogy should feel like an event, but Disney is apparently going to do their best to turn those movies into something about as exciting buying a can of soda.

The live action tv series sounds interesting though. At least that's something we haven't had from Star Wars yet.
Still waiting for the Tetris Trilogy.

high rated
No different than Marvel Studios running their various characters (are they considered separate franchises?) and getting at least one movie a year. Star Wars is really a setting, of course, and there's no reason the Skywalker saga has to be where it stays. Could easily do a KOTOR3 as a movie (I'd prefer a TV series, probably, but what do I know? Nuthin') or just go explore other parts of the galaxy.

As long as there's a good Star Wars movie every now and then, I don't lose anything by having a bunch of other ones I don't watch. And it's not like Lucas was cranking out quality films after Jedi >.>
A TV show might be something good for a change.

My biggest vent is let Star Wars be Star Wars. Disney should stick to their usual brain dead boy meets girls or vica versa for their own stuff. While SW ep 7 was different. It still had that silly Disney vibe. Rouge One was even more so. I understand they have the rights now but their thinking is a mismatch to the Star Wars universe. I am hoping ep 8 will be better and that childish plots are pushed away.
I feel curious about the idea of telling a different story in a different part of the galaxy. But over-exposition could very well kill the franchise.

So... like the Marvel superheroes universe?

Of course they are. Money, you know. That's what makes Disney tick.

Didn't they announce plans to release a Star Wars movie every year when they bought the franchise, though? This shouldn't be a surprise. However, at least from the article, Johnson's saying all the right things (not Skywalker related, different part of the Galaxy, etc.) That's something I've personally wanted to see for a long time.

I'm of a different mind about this and hold out little hope it will be anything good. Unless they plan on doing it as an intentional short run (4 or 5 seasons) like Breaking Bad.

On a side note, looks like they're going for the captive audience with those plans to have the Star Wars streaming movies and the TV series only available on their upcoming platform. So I won't be watching the TV series anyway. No freakin' way I'm subscribing to yet another service.

As far as I'm concerned, Star Wars died in 1978.
$$$
Bring it on! THE FORCE AWAKENS and ROGUE ONE were fine films, and Lucasfilm wouldn't be giving Rian Johnson the chance to craft a whole new trilogy if he didn't deliver with THE LAST JEDI. The future of STAR WARS is bright.

I think the main challenge for a further triology will be keeping it recognisable; all the movies up until now have been based around the same core of characters, made possible by the second triology being set before the first and the newest triology including some of the original cast. Another triology though is going to based purely on the newer characters introduced though isn't it? So with that it mind will it still feel like authentic Star Wars or will they just be new films set in the Star Wars universe?...
And I still haven't watched a single Star Wars movie...

Every year, yeah, but I didn't think that means every year forever. I'm not surprised there is going to be another trilogy, but I thought there'd be more time before that happens.

To me that depends on what it will be. Simply not being about Skywalkers and being set elsewhere doesn't really mean much. In fact, the next trilogy shifting away from the ongoing storyline (such as it is) only makes the current trilogy and the new characters feel even less interesting and more expendable to me than they already did.

Despite it's weaknesses and padding I liked Rebels, so if an animated show could be good, noreason to think they can't do as well with live action. They can, of course, also fail miserably. But at least it's going to be something new. Even if it's a train wreck, at least it will be interesting to see it derail.

And people will continue to spend their money watching these movies.
