Hey everyone. I have a very odd issue with my copy of Gabriel Knight 1, so I really hope someone might be able to help.

So you know that delightful jingle that plays every time you earn points? Okay so when I play GK1 on Scummvm (or even if I just double-click the GOG shortcut on my desktop), it automatically plays the game with the DOS version's music. I don't want that. I want the improved music from the Windows version. However, if I change the audio mode from default to Windows MIDI, I get the Windows version's music, but the jingle is gone. I tried everything I could to find a reason for this problem, but I can't seem to find anything.

A few years ago, I played the game using DOSBox, but that was before I got Windows 10. It worked perfectly back then. So I thought I might try DOSBox again. Although the music is the Windows version's, and the jingle is there, now all dialogue is being automatically skipped without any chance of being able to read it nor with any voice acting. And I know it's not the CPU speed that's at fault, because everything else in the game is being played at normal speed.

This is driving me insane. And it bugs me that I can't find anything on this matter anywhere. So... Can anyone here help?

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem with the dialogue. I can't find any way around it!

I know this is several months after your post, so you may have found a solution already, but in case you, or anyone else has this problem, this is the solution I've discovered:

I run the game through SCUMMVM version 2.0.0. Edit Game. Under the "Audio" tab, click "override," then change it to the "Windows MIDI" option (I think this is what you've already done),

Then, under the MT-32 tab, click "override" and enable "True Roland 32."

This worked for me to restore the jingle. I'm not sure if it made any other alterations though, as I haven't completed the game in this setting.

Hope this helps!
Ok, so I posted a little too soon.

The Roland MT-32 Music is a little different from the Windows MIDI music. More enhanced than the DOS music, but less rich than the Windows version, in my opinion. But it does restore the jingle, maybe it could be a decent compromise?

I'll keep experimenting with things and update if I've come up with a better solution.

Hi.
I'm just annoyed with this very issue.
- Have you discovered anything?
- Has anyone tried it with DosBOX? I assume maybe it will allow separating the "Music" (General MIDI) and "Sound" (Sound Blaster or something similar) to enoy both worlds.
I set mine to use the MT-32 emulator munt and no music was playing. Reading that post fixed my issue wherein i set Audio to munt and then MT-32 to override and use True Roland 32. Tried the game with an SC-55 in GS and GM mode and it seemed off even though the MT-32 wiki entry indicates the SC-55 is the original synth? sure doesn't seem like it
I don't know if you guys are still having the problem, but know that if you run the game through a more recent version of ScummVM, you can get the windows midi to work WITH the jingle just fine. It might be a bug with the older version of ScummVM.

Hey, I know it's been a long time since this post was made. Sorry I haven't been checking on it. You're right that the newer versions of Scummvm fixed this issue, but now another issue came up. The voice acting audio is now very grainy for some reason. Like it has a bit of white noise attached to it. I just don't get it, the first time I played this game, I had zero issues. Why is this happening after all these years?

Mmmh, I wouldn't know for sure. Are you using the latest stable version? If so, you could try one of the nightly builds, and see if the problem was caught and fixed. They might be trying to improve compatibility, and causing bugs as a result. since scummvm isn't a commercial product, I figure bugs might linger around for a bit before a fix is pushed on the stable version.

I'll check that out, thanks. However, since this was a few years ago, I forgot to mention that I learned recently that the jingle issue is ONLY in the first screen of the game. It plays everywhere else, but it just doesn't play in the bookstore itself for some reason. So it's not as big a deal as I thought it was.

I see. As for myself, I don't seem to get audio quality which is worse than any walkthroughs I have seen of the game (I didn't play the original back then, so I can't compare the audio without checking it on youtube). I do use an experimental build, however, since I also use scummvm to play The Longest Journey, and it's something they recently added.

If you figure out what's causing the white noise, make sure to let us know. :)
