Also a memorable part of the game! :P
Fun facts: As well as Robert Loggia, Freespace 2 also features the voice work of Kurtwood Smith (AKA "Red" from that 70s show), Ronny Cox (AKA Senator Kinsey from Stargate SG-1) and even Stephen Baldwin.
Although not a proper actor, I thought the voice work of Jason Scott as Cmdr Snipes (DIVE DIVE DIVE) was the second best of the game, next to Loggia of course.
They dont make space shooters like they used to :(
The voice acting in Freespace 2 pretty much rocks, which is something people rarely accuse sci-fi games, space sim or otherwise, for having. :D

THIS was my favorite part of the game, one of my favorite parts of any game anywhere anytime. I had a minor heart attack... it was great
Definitely a memorable moment, but let us not forget the final moments of the game, trying desperately to reach the final node in time before the 100-Sathanas armada supernovas the sun.
ALL POWER TO ENGINES, GO GO GO!
"Command let Bosch escape!"
"I can live with being a pawn if the game makes sense!"
"Command should shut down that node and send the Aquitaine back to Deneb. We've got no business being out here."
"If Command needed your opinion they'd promote you to Admiral. Now shut up and focus!"
The radio chatter is great however you look at it.
Yeah, Freespace II paved the way for another game which tried but didn't quite manage the same feel. Tachyon: The Fringe. But come on... Hail to the King, Baby...
Edit: Doh. BB codes didn't quite work out as I thought. Please add [i] to it?

I'm not sure where you got the notion that "Tacyhon" had anything to do with Freespace. Different developer, different publisher, different setting, different game engine...
...no whatsoever connection between the two franchises.
On that note, yes they tried to pave the way for a game: Freespace 3 that is.
But Volition was bought out by THQ, and Interplay went down the drain thanks to "enlightened" management, and the rights to Freespace 3 are in legal limbo.

They both had great, professional voice acting is the connection, and what this thread is pretty much about. One might argue that Wing Commander had them both beat with Mark Hamill, but that was more about the FMV.
Also, holy effing crap there was a Wing Commander animated TV series. I had no idea.

There was also a movie... a horrible, horrible movie

I liked the movie. Admittedly it was a "Leave your brain at the door and possibly forget to pick it up again when you leave" sort of movie but it was entertaining. I'm more than happy to enjoy a "based on" movie/book/game, movie/book/game (read as "Based on book, movie" etc...") on it's own merits without constantly comparing it to the source material.
It also started my love affair with Saffron Burrows so I might be biased.

Interplay recently came back from the dead after selling the Fallout game rights to Bethesda. I think Interplay still owns the Freespace IP, though.

Unfortunately they're working on a Fallout MMO rather than a Freespace update... they should do a Freespace MMO, with more arcady feel than EVE.
Hell, they could just make the old Freespace Code GPL-ed, and reserve the rights to run the MMO servers. Throw in a couple of coders of their own and using the SCP they could spit out a game pretty soon.
