Does anybody know how to find the dosbox configuration on a mac?

You need to dig down into the Fantasy General.app package to:

Fantasy General.app/Contents/Resources/game/Fantasy General.app/Contents/Resources/Fantasy General.boxer/DOSBox Preferences.conf

In the Finder, locate Fantasy General.app. Right click/control-click and select "Show Package Contents". Do the same for the inner Fantasy General.app and Fantasy General.boxer packages.

I wouldn't have thought of that. I had to dig really deep to find the config file, but I found it, and it worked.

XrayJohnson: Solution:
Go to your game folder. Open dosbox_fg.conf with your editor. Scroll down to the line where it says "cycles=auto". Replace "auto" by "15500" for slow scroll speed and slow enemy turn animation speed. I put in "20000" for moderate speed. (Mouse movement speed is not or hardly affected.)

I don't seem to have any programs that open this file. What do I need to do so?

It's a text file. Use Wordpad in case of non-Windows line endings.

With a bit of trial and error my ideal cycles speed is 60000, the game runs extremely smooth and the scrolling speed is perfect for me, anything lower than 60000 makes the gameplay too choppy for my liking and is not worth doing.
