Avast - it didn't think it was a threat, though, just a "suspicious" file... And it sometimes detects modified .exe files and checks them before executing them, but it didn't find anything wrong with them. So, don't worry, everything's fine, it's just cautious. ;)

johannus8: Good point. :)
I made a tool for that issue. You can get the source code here:
https://github.com/j-frei/EmpireEarthZoomChanger

A compiled binary can be found at the release page:
https://github.com/j-frei/EmpireEarthZoomChanger/releases
I'm not sure whether it works on your pc.
It is a 64bit build and may not work on processors older than i7 920. It is 17MB but only due to Qt... :P
Do you mind sharing how you came up with the positions for the zoom and cull value in the binary files? I'm trying to patch my exe that I installed from the original CD but it seems to have a different size so your tool won't work.

It's a bit difficult to explain how to do it.
Do you use the original Empire Earth Gold Edition/Collection as CD-ROM?
In that case I need to look for my own copy of the disc (will take a few weeks) to analyze the files. Otherwise, you can also send me the corresponding exe files. In any case, I will update the sources on GitHub.

Pherim: This is amazing, it makes widescreen resolutions playable, finally! I used to play in 1280x1024 until now because that resolution had the biggest FOV (vertically), but this helps a lot. I can even play it in borderless window mode with dgvoodoo2.

Works great! You even managed to move the fog even further away! However, it's a bit too far zoomed out for my taste, and as far as I know there is no way to zoom in just a bit... any chance to get a patch with a lower zoom setting? And one for the main game? Just asking. ;) Great work, anyway!

Thank you for this awesome tool, it works great!

I encountered the problem, that my EE-AOC.exe (v1.0 I think) was not supported by the tool (I have the Ultimate Edition EE1+2+3).
I was able to fix it by:
1. Downloading this EE-AOC.exe (seems to be v2.0, download link is the red button on the upper right)
http://ee.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=3033
2. Modding it with the ZoomChanger
3. Replacing the original EE-AOC.exe with the modded one

I tried it on the exe of the original CD-ROM Version of the game (not Gold Edition) - sorry for the late response. In the meantime I have already bought the GOG Version and applied your tool and it worked flawlessly. So thank you anyway!

Hi johannus8,

I made a request on your GitHub site: https://github.com/j-frei/EmpireEarthZoomChanger/issues/1 and attached corresponding exe files.

Thank YOU very much.

Hi Giaur

Sorry, I did not find my old EE cds and realized only recently that you wrote a GitHub message.
I added the support for the NeoEE files to the code and recompiled the tool.

Could you tell whether it does now work for NeoEE? I don't have any NeoEE setup on my PC. But I strongly assume that it works as expected. :)

Cheers

Hi johannus8,

I can surely confirm that everything you have done work perfectly on original and NeoEE patched binaries.

Thank you very much :))

Hi johannus8,

do you think, is it possible to do the same thing for Empires Dawn of the Modern World? It's the same Producer - probably the same technology..

Here's the GOG forum thread for that issue: https://www.gog.com/forum/empires_dawn_of_the_modern_world/change_increase_zoom_distance

If you wish, I could send you the binary file. Thank you for your great work.

Hi Giaur,

thank you for the feedback!

I don't own the game but I can have a look at it. :)

Though, not in the next few days since I am quite busy right now. :|

Cheers!

Pherim: Perfect! Works flawlessly! My antivirus doesn't like the program or the modified .exes, but once I configured it to ignore them everything just works! I've set zoom to -30 and fog to 45, which seem to be good values for 1080p. Thank you very much!

johannus8: You're welcome! :)

May I ask: Which anti-virus are you using? According to virustotal https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/75a765905a8484ad709c04fe27d4f4dbf13562e6174623dc7f943a558f3cae22/detection, the file is accepted as benigne.... Strange :o
Hi Johannues8,

Wenn du mal in München bist gerne in ner Bar - ansonsten via Paypal/IBAN :) Magst du mir per PN deine Paypal/IBAN schicken?

Johann

Indeed!
@Giaur89: I posted my results on the following page:
https://www.gog.com/forum/empires_dawn_of_the_modern_world/zoom_mod_tool

It turned out that Empires DMW handles the zoom as well as the cull differently compared to EE1.
Unfortunately, it was not possible to track down the exact value in the binary that solely defined the zoom. Therefore, a small section within the rendering code path needs to be redirected to a new segment where my scaling code can reside. Hence, the a new code segment needs to be added to the binary unlike EE1. Due to that, an additional patching step needs to be performed by the tool.

Hope it helps.
Have fun! :)

Cheers,
Johann
