DX1 Rebirth has an option to play outside music sources, and I want to use the Mac CD version of the music that came with the GOG extras, but I'm having trouble getting it to play in the correct order. Do I need to make a special playlist file or rename all the tracks?

For that matter, how do I get the Redbook audio from the original GOG installation of Descent 2 to play in DX2 Rebirth? Where is the Redbook audio in the GOG installation?

You can download the Red Book audio from here: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/descent_series/the_definitive_collection

To get them to play correctly in Rebirth, you can create a Soundtrack AddOn pack. You can download a sample here: http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/addons/

You can unzip one of those soundtrack addons and see how they're put together, then just create a .zip file using the same format with the Mac music, or the Red Book music.

I personally would be very appreciative if you'd send me links to your AddOn packs if you end up making them. (And if you don't want to yourself, if you send me a zip of the music files for mac, I might can create a pack for you :)
If you know how to do it, why haven't you done it?
Well I hadn't even thought about it until your post. And I just got the Red Book audio like 3 days ago (and I'm still trying to figure out the ordering so I can make an addon pack) And I don't have the Mac music, so I can't unless someone sends it to me :)
I can't upload large files without whatever site I'm uploading to resetting the connection for reasons of ping timeouts or whatever, so you'll have to get it from someone else or buy the GOG version of the game.

For the same reason I can't upload large files, downloading large files that I won't even be using just to look at their internal structure seems like a waste of transfer cap. If you or someone else had the file directory layout from within those addon packs handy and would post them, that would be much easier.

Additionally, the Redbook audio for D2 is already there, in the game folder, but it's locked up in some weird, proprietary ".gog" archive file that even Universal Extractor can't open.

I made a topic about it in the Suggestions board on the DXX-Rebirth forums. Link here.

I'm pretty sure I've found the following details on this forum, but maybe not (it was very well hidden). Still, here's how to play D2's Redbook audio from gog.com's version.

The .gog archive is actually similar to a simple .iso file (I think you can rename it to .iso and read it, that worked on another game). But Redbook tracks won't be readable with this kind of file - for that you need a .cue sheet (which as far as I know lists tracks and track order for Redbook audio, among other things, and points to them in the other image file). In gog.com version, the .cue file is named "DESCENT_II.inst" (kudos to the guy who found that in the original post!)

You'll have to "mount" this file in something like DaemonTools.

In order for this software to detect .inst and .gog files, select 'all file "." ' when mounting "DESCENT_II.inst". It will eventually detect it like any other .cue file, and here you go! (as long as the .gog (.iso) file is in the same folder). You should even be able to directly play the soundtrack from Windows.

Then, launch Rebirth, and select "play CD audio" in the options. All the tracks will be played the same way as if you were playing the DosBox build.

Thanks for the AddOn packs A_Future_Pilot, they sound slightly different!

Hope this helps!

I managed to mount the file using DaemonTools Pro and the .inst file as a substitute '.cue' sheet. I was also able to mount the .gog file by switching the extension to .iso, but the Redbook tracks wouldn't play if I did it that way.

I was also able to rip the music tracks with WinAMP Pro (I encoded them in MP3, since I'm pretty sure DX2 doesn't support FLAC yet, but I own some of the higher end MP3 codecs, and they came out nicely). Now all I need is the proper file structure for making my own Addon packs.
After reading the discussion over on the Rebirth forum, I realize that an AddOn pack probably isn't the best way to go. Instead you should just put all the music in a jukebox folder, and then play it. (I was under the impression that the redbook audio had predefined tracks for each level, but apparently it's supposed to just all loop continuously, which is what the jukebox does.)
Apologies for reviving a very old thread, but I'm late to this game and just now setting up D1X and D2X. I'm not a developer, merely a nerd. I have mp3's of the Mac CD version soundtrack for Descent 1, and can't for the life of me get the jukebox to play the tracks correctly, or find a dxa addon. There is a dxa for redbook audio for Descent 2, but not the original game, which only had the CD soundtrack for Mac.

Is there anyone out there willing to take these mp3's and create a dxa to drop in the D1X main directory? I'd love to play this game with the badass industrial soundtrack from the CD instead of the relatively weak sounding SC55 midi soundtrack.

Thanks, please redirect if there is an answer to this question.
