Nurthis is correct. You are not supposed to be able to get to that island at this point. Come back via the tavern after you have had the chance to level up a bit.

For the mission where you need to capture and protect villagers for 400s, (if I remember correctly) my army got wiped many times. Then I used the square formation instead of flanks or line and surprisely, my army lasted 4x longer so I could defend. I hope it could help.
