Can I play this with my 360 controller? Is the game frustrating to play with a mouse and keyboard?

Shakey-Lo: here is an xpadder profile I have made for BG&E with the 360 controller. just run xpadder then open the controller profile by clicking the small controller icon on the left, then load the BG&E profile on the right. then run the game and you should be good to go!
xpadder

I *think* it faithfully mimics the original xbox control scheme as best it can. only thing is you don't get analogue movement, the thumbstick is just mapped to WASD, but that can't be helped because of the game only supporting the keyboard.
oh and you must have the default keybindings in BG&E for it to work properly.
I was able to play up to the first save point with no dramas, controls felt fairly natural.
I know this has been solved already with the xpadder stuff, but I wanted to propose another solution which just happens to be FREE..
I used Joy to Key.
Joy to key info
Download
It works really well. I was able to map everything in the game to the pad, including the mouse controls to the right analog stick of my Logitec pad.
Worked really well for me.

Replying to a year old post just in case someone finds it useful!

I've made a JoyToKey config for BG&E on a wired 360 controller which attempts to replicate the XPadder profile posted above (so with any luck is as faithful to the XBOX original as that is).

Played the first five minutes of awesomeness without problem, and hopefully helps a few people who bought it this promo weekend.

Download the config from here, unzip it and drop it into your JoyToKey folder.

EDIT: I don't have hosting atm, will put the file back up when I've got a new home!

I'm using a PS2 game pad adapter, and would like to play with the original mapping. Just found it on GameFAQs:

Left Analog Stick - Move Jade or Steer Vehicles
Right Analog Stick - Move the Camera/Zoom In or Out
R1 Button - Switch to First Person Viewing
R2 Button - Run or Accelerate Vehicles
R3 Button - Position Camera Behind Jade
L1 - Crouch
L2 - N/A
L3 - N/A
Start - Access Menu and Pause Gameplay
Select - Access Map/Read New E-Mails
X Button - Context Sensitive Action/Attack with Staff
Square Button - Roll/Detach Hovercraft from Beluga
Triangle - Context Sensitive Sidekick Action/Compass on Vehicle
D-Pad - Select Items in Gameplay

I've always heard how great this game was and all. Now that I finally managed to make it work after the creative EAX problem preventing the game to start, I need to select my language every time I start the game and I can't even play with a controller so that's quite a downer. Tried with the keyboard and mouse but I find it very awkward with this sort of game. I know some people will say it works fine with a keyboard but some masochists could say the same about playing Dark Souls with a keyboard. This is a typical console adventure game so it was just fair to assume it had controller support, my mistake for not getting information about this lack of support. I guess we have to be indulgent, it was made by an indie developer with no PC experience ;)
I did just finish the game with my ps3 controller, using JoyToKey and the SCP PS3 driver. (that driver makes all games see it as x360 controller)

There are a few issues with the controls, but i don't think they can be solved. The camera control is annoying sometimes, but it seems the game is just like that.

On the internet, you find people using Xpadder and the Pinnacle Game Profiler, which may work as good or even better as JoyToKey, but they also cost money.

Here's the JoyToKeyconfig file that i used:

Use8Axes=1
UseDiagonalInput=0

It might work for X360 controllers, but it might also only work for ps3 controllers. It's actually a config that i found on the web(might be the one from this thread), but changed it, so it maps the mouse to the right stick instead of L2 and R2...
You should try as well the software Antimicro, since is open source.
And you can always check Strategy Wiki to set the keys to the gamepad buttons that fit with the videoconsoles control setup.

You can't map the controller? I have this on Steam and plan to get this 4gb enabled version instead plus i hate DRM but on Steam i was able to map the controller only bad thing was i had to reverse the STICKS so it took some getting used to.. For some reason it didn't wanna work unless i swapped them around.. Then i set it up on my 360 controller pretty much how i rememver it being from Xbox back in the day but added a Skyrim feel to it.. Sad if i cant do that on this more superior version though.. I mean IT DID COME OUT ON ORIGINAL XBOX so WHY WOULDN'T IT HAVE SUPPORT right?

Omg this dude posted this in 2009 and didn't get a response until 2016 LMAO

In case anyone (like me) finds this topic years later and wants to use the open source AntiMicroX to play Beyond Good and Evil on GOG with a controller, here's the AntiMicroX controller config file I created: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vmcvmp55hbp3f4o/BeyondGoodAndEvil.gamecontroller.amgp?dl=0 Hope it's useful! :)

THANK YOU!!!
If you have PlayStation or Xbox controllers, you can fix the movement camera by hiding the controller from the game but having it still work and then mapping all buttons to the keyboard and mouse. Tested movement and camera as working perfectly this way. eg in ds4Windows > profile > disable virtual controller and apply. Then remap eg right stick to mouse movement and left to arrow keys.

For whatever reason they messed up the controller movement camera so it snaps back center and makes everything difficult. Then messed that up further by disabling keyboard & mouse when the controller is found by the game. Otherwise, if you unplug the controller and start the game you would get the movement camera working correctly [via mouse].

Same principle will work with any controller seeing the snap back camera but you may or may not need to use other controller software.
