Same here. The mod seemed to install fine, and I can go as far as loading a save game, but then WIndows pops up an error dialog: "An Assertion failed in D:\Dev\Ba;dur\Cvisibility.cpp at line number 1484". Uninstalling the mod allows the game to work again.

Do you use windowed mode? For BG1 the widescreen mod only works in fullscreen.
i didnt even know there was a windows mode, but yeah nearly the same error, just simple step by step with the gog version from install to patch and option chosen to achieve 1280x720 as an example res

acb2k9: I tried going 1024x640 and all I got was messed up graphics. I saw that post and switched to 1280x800 and everything is fine.

frankd3: I hope you weren't trying 900x600 based on what I said. I made a mistake. It's supposed to be 960x600.
But I'm glad 1280x800 worked. It's definitely one of the standard resolutions.
No, I just used a standard 16:10 resolution. I didn't want to characters to look like ants...
I think you need to start the game from bgmain2.exe in your install directory, rather than from the link (which points to the baldur.exe launcher).

Also, Widescreen works both fullscreen and windowed on BG1, you need to reinstall it every time you switch though (no clue why, the guy who researched the windowed offsets for me told me so).

arcling: If you are getting awful framerates with the widesceen mod, turn off DirectDraw Acceleration in DXDIAG as per this forum post: Icewind Dale FPS Advice
You may end up with a bit of screen tear at higher framerates, but its worth it.
Good find. Unfortunately the instructions for disabling it on Win7 aren't working for me. Followed them exactly. :(

It works fine for me with the regular launcher.

-Uninstall the mod (make sure its in the main BG folder, launch it, set destination folder to main BG folder, follow instructions)
-Uninstall BG and save games
-Install BG + ToSC
-Put mod in main BG folder, launch it, set destination folder to main BG folder
-Select 1 (Infinity Engine option), then 1280, then 720
-Let it patch
-Launch game as normal

When I tried to run the 3 gibberlings patch it foobar'd my installation, and I normally have good luck with these things. Just be aware

I am going to be waiting for BG2 and then run the other method discussed
in what way did it foobar your install? when you run the install it backs up all important files so you can uninstall it later on with (hopefully) no ill side effects. I think that running this will screw up any save games done before the patch. It's probably best to try this on a clean game install with no saves.

Also,

vbigiani, could you make mention in your first post about the gui patch so people know why the game is stuck in the corner of the screen? Thanks.

Sure - I was waiting for the author to officially release the gog-compatible version of the GUI mod.
@pb1866 "in what way did it foobar your install?"

All appeared to be working, but starting a new game froze it up every time, and trying to run a saved game did as well. When I reinstalled vanilla BG1, it still failed. Then I destroyed the files, removed the registry entries, and reinstalled. It is working now.

It is most likely an isolated event, as others have had it working. But I am just going to play it vanilla

Thanks for the help.

Same thing happened here, again... just cant get it working, crashes freezes even when i use the built in uninstaller...

So I'll play Vanilla and just deal with it till BG2 drops... the patch needs better documentation and explicit instructions. More testing it seems to, since this is no longer an isolated event as evident on this forum.
vbigiani, I'm looking at the download page for the widescreen mod, and I'm wondering what the Linux download does exactly.

I use Linux primarily and since the Gog version is for Windows, which installer would I use? I'm assuming there was a way to run BG on Linux based on the fact there is a Linux version of your mod.

I don't think that's the issue..I have a tendency of screwing things up and this was very straightforward and worked fine for me. Something specific with your system perhaps.

BG (and BG2..) work pretty well with Wine under Linux. The mod's readme contains details on how to install the mod on Linux.
