Is it normal for all sound effects and voices to stop playing a few seconds after entering a new area? By that I mean I can enter a house and i'll get the usual selection voices and footstep sounds/etc but after a few seconds I won't be able to hear them anymore until hitting a new screen. This also applies to combat sounds and the sound effect that plays when you select a party member.

I've done a bit of googling for this and can't seem to find anyone with the same issue.

Try to drop the OpenAL library files from OpenAL soft direct into the game folder. It solved it for me. Do you have a creative x-fi sound card?

I do indeed have a creative x-fi sound card. After playing the game using my headphone amp connected via USB for 15 minutes, it certainly seems like that's whats causing the problem.

I didn't have any success with the OpenAL files, but I have no issues playing the game without my sound card (I might just drop the card at some point as it doesn't really serve much purpose anymore).

Thanks for this, this issue was becoming a bit of an annoyance after I started noticing how much voice acting I was missing.

Hi,

Don't throw it out - cherish it! ;-) For example, adding the two Alchemy dsound files to stereo-only games switch them to 5.1 - e.g. Fifa Soccer 14 (football stadium atmosphere on 5.1 just sounds a teensy bit better than 2.0 ;-)). Apart from that, the Alchemy stuff works with everything that supports DirectSound hardware mode (even DOSBox)

The 2.0 patch for BG2EE works a bit better with the X-FI (cf. my own older discussion thread: https://www.gog.com/forum/baldurs_gate_series/odd_sound_problem_under_bgee_12)

Now the BG2 intro plays o.k. - however, the in-game intro (before Imoen comes) still hangs at some point - o.k. pressing Esc also gets round that problem. However, the game is the culprit here and not the card!

You do not get this problem in the original version.

Have not yet got round to trying out the 2.1 patch.

Cheers
Patrick
