I'm not pushing Windows 10 or DX11+ (I myself will not update to Windows 10), but if you want to run the original BG1 on Windows 8 you need DX9.0c.

I didn't miss part of your statement, I'm just saying that you are wrong about BG1 not needing Direct X.

Just read System Requirements in https://www.gog.com/support/baldurs_gate_the_original_saga

Edit: also see this: https://www.gog.com/support/baldurs_gate_the_original_saga/game_does_not_launch_possible_workarounds

especially the part about installing the June 2010 DirectX package.

karasutono: #2: Ergos ; You've missed the entire part about BG1 not needing any, I repeat, any, form of DX to run it. There is no need for Direct X, aka DX. None. The game does not use Direct X.
You are *so* wrong. The original Baldur's Gate came with the system requirements (part):

Windows 95 with DirectX 5.0 or later
DirectX Certified Video Card with at least 2 MB of video RAM
DirectX Certified Sound Card

The GOG version *requires* DirectX 9. Higher versions just don't work with such an old game.

richlind33: Have you considered going back to win7?

It works well enough, and It's my final contribution to the coffers of microscum.

karasutono: Unfortunately The pc came with 8 on it. I may actually look up disks for win7, but by the time I get around to that I may need a new pc. This ones aged well, but it may be time to just grab another which I'm dreading given that if this came with 8... newer would probably mean 10, and 10's lovely cache of spying and hardware issues.
I'm going to build my next rig, partly because what they sell in the retail stores is crap, and it's the only way to stop feeding the Redmond trolls.
Even with DX10, there is no fix that seems to work. -.-;

Seeming to think now that BG1 is just a slag game as it never passes intro movies.

What part of "The GOG version *requires* DirectX 9" don't you understand?

Seeming to think now that BG1 is just a slag game as it never passes intro movies.
Right, BG1 is a "slag" game (whatever that means) because you can't get things right.
DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime

DirectX 9 and Direct Play on Windows 10 and Windows 8
Apologies. Meant 9. The June 2010 version.

It is not working even with the DX though.
I did try to access it through another shortcut leading into it's program and received an odd error this time:
Box popped up with the title "Assertion"

Assertion:
An Assertion failed in D:\Dev\Chitin\ChDimm.cpp at line number 581
Programmer says :Unable to Open BIF:Data\SFXSound.bif

karasutono: Is there a fix for the BG 1 (Original, unmodded) version that allows it past the intro scenes?

Most times I click through the first three dev scenes, and the one with Neiztche quote causes an Auto-Kill on the program noting that : StackHash Add3 is the error causing it to terminate. If I let the movies play Then it gets up to the intro with Sarevok choking and dumping the knight over the towers edge to form the TSR logo... then crashes with the same error.
Using too long installation path in BG1 causes exactly this problem (crash after intro). It is not OS-dependent, the same thing happened in Win9x. I don't remember exactly how long the space reserved for the installation path was, but it was unusually short for a Windows game. Try installing the game to fairly short and simple path, like C:\Games\Baldur1.

That error can typically be associated with the issue that jkiiskinen mentioned, ie. your installation path is too long -- often (but not always) associated with pirated games.
First off.
Sorry for having been a pain.

Beyond that. Praise be to Gond, it works now. Seems an odd error, but whatever. Just hope I can slap it into a Drive before killing off the old pc.
