So after installing windows 8.1, the widescreen mod only shows the game full screen if I have it set to the full resolution of my monitor which is 1920x1080. But It's a laptop screen so i would play it at 1280x720 so that everything wasn't too small. So now if I try to play it at that resolution it is just a small box in the center of the screen. Only 1920x1080 will be full screen. I even tried changing the resolution of the whole system before launching the game and it is the same. Anyone know of a solution?
I have the exact same problem as you when installing the GOG-version of BG1 and 2. I have tried both with and without widescreen mod and it doesn't matter, I get the same problem in either way. I get a rectangle in the middle of the screen with a black border around as long as I do not disable 3d acceleration in the config. I have Win 8.1 and a nvidia gt740m card. The funny thing tough is that I have installed the CD-version on 3 other computers (one with a similar nvidia card and two other with integrated intel graphic cards, one with win 8.1 and two with win 7) without getting this problem, so I start to wonder if this has anything to do with the gog version of the game.
The only solution I have found is to disable 3d acceleration.
Also, this is why I was reading this post in the first place. I get this. Similar computer setup.
I believe I have tried every conceivable solution other than disabling 3D acceleration (combinations of resolutions, compatibility modes, with or without widescreen mod, changing the primary video card). Disabling that works, but I feel my graphics get ugly. Especially the edges of the fog of war. If anybody knows how to restore that I'd love to hear.
The other option is just running the game in 1920*1080, which is my native resolution. But that way my party consists of ants crawling around in a tiny bubble of light amidst the darkness. Beautifull, but not so playable. I've read a suggestion on the BG EE boards to increase the field of vision (the bubble of light), but that would probably mess with combats, weapon ranges, AI and such.
I blamed my Intel integrated graphics for not scaling the smaller resolution game output to my monitors native resolution at first (I've read about similar problems with other, even relatively new games with an integrated/specialised 3D chipset combination), but now I'm not so sure anymore. For one, in my nVidia control panel (which has very little options due to the integrated graphics chip being 'primary') I have forced BGT to be run by the nVidia card. Same problem. Also, when I change the resolution of my desktop, it does scale properly (no black borders, all icons and such appear larger).
So, I'm beginning to think it might be the GOG version. Twilek, you stated you have run the CD version on 3 other computers, but have you run it on the same computer that causes these problems for you? Maybe you've already said so, but I didn't quite understand what you meant exactly.
In that case, maybe this needs to be reported in detail tot GOG?
Thanks for reading and hope somebody can help. Just hearing the BG1 background noises again makes my nose run after 15 years :D
