drmlessgames: Anyone know if there's any source modifications in the making now? Cant find any.
As I mentioned in other topic, there are several individuals at FreeGameDev Forums that plan to try to port the engine by replacing all proprietary libraries (DirectX 7 at least, others are unknown at this point) used with open source equivalents (OpenGL/Ogre3D, OpenAl, Bullet etc) with the ultimate goal being able to port the engine to other platforms so game can be played on Linux, Mac or what have you. None of them aim explitely to fix bugs but replacing DirectX 7 and other old libraries should improve performance and stability as well as allow use of modern graphical features in game.

Thanks for that! I'll be keeping an eye on Arx Liberis; this guy plans to make a proper native DirectX 9 port in addition to cross-platform OpenGL support, which is the ideal way of handling it.
Is it still advised with the new patch to turn off bump mapping under Win 7?

I have it on. No problems for me. Win 7 X64
the game still has random CTDs that happen often and the rendering fix makes the game run very slow.

I've applied the patch to the 1.19 version I got from GOG last month and so far it works great (running on Vista 32-bit, as Administrator and in Win98 compatibility mode, although the latter might not make any difference at all).

* I didn't lose any of my savegames from 1.19, all of them work fine. (But then I didn't install the game in the Program Files folder, not sure if that would affect the savegames, so better make a backup if in doubt).

* In cutscenes, the cinemascope bars have the correct length, no more small gaps in them.

* The "6 minutes of black screen when loading savegames" issue seems to be completely gone, even when saving in Arx.

* So far I didn't run into any more "Fatal Memory Error(!!!)" yet.

Awesome, much respect to Arkane Studios for supplying the patch and making it open source!
It's great Arcane patched the game, what, almost 10 years after the game was released, but I'm not very happy with the HUD scaling.

Inventory is already bit too small with 1280x1024 for my liking, so it must be rather tiny with 1920x1080...

Hopefully some modder will fix it with the source!
it lags awfully on my GTX 280 when any font is displayed (the more text, the more severe is the lag) the same using 1.21 as it was using 1.19.

Dammit, i can't play this game due to bugs for 5+ years, and this patch just adds to the frustration...

I only hope it gets ported.
Any other mods planned besides Arx Liberis?
I just tried it with 1.21 (and the unofficial patch) and I seem to have some performance issues along with my device as a mouse lose control at random intervals. It just happens and I can't move the cursor and it never happens in any other games. How's the support with VSync? I think I have forced it via NV panel and D3DO. :/
Hi, I bought this game many (!) years ago. Recently I downloaded the 1.21 patch from their official website. I can't run the game, because it says, that it can't find "steam.dll".

I even tried installing steam, but it didn't help. I'm using WinXP. Did anyone else have this problem?

Buy the GOG version.

You are trying to run a disc version? What OS are you using? In Vista or Windows 7, make sure you are running the installer as administrator. You will probably also want to install to a location other than Program Files, as that folder has extra protections that can interfere with games.

EDIT: And yes, as a last resort the GOG version is not very expensive and comes with a bunch of extras. Could be worth it if you can't get your copy working. The GOG version already has the 1.21 patch applied.

It's a shame that no mods are being made apart from a few fixes here and there.

Well considering there are no modding tools for the game it not all that surprising. Also Arx Libertatis () is pretty much the sole remaining active project. All other's beside [url=http://code.google.com/p/arx-fatalis-fixed/]arx-fatalis-fixed stopped in their infancy and even that hasn't been been updated since march.
