DO NOT let bethesda anywhere near arcanum.

EVER.

They !@#$%^ up Fallout 3 already.
If they let Obsidian develop like Fallout NV then that would be pretty interesting to see
As long as it stayed isometric of course and wasn't a remake
I Personally Find the universe of Arcanum Fascinating A Third Person RPG Would Be Awesome.
I'd like to see inXile do an Arcanum sequel once they finish Wasteland 2.

*Laugh* It's funny that you had mentioned Inxile. I was just watching gameplay/demo videos of the new Wastelands 2 game. It looks very good. I'm THIS close to buying the early access game on Steam.
Anyway, I'm not sure why there's so much hate for Bethesda. I really like the TES game and I enjoyed the Fallout 3 and New Vegas games. I will say this: They are not what i was hoping for. The games were fun in themselves, but certainly like the original two Fallout games. I like the isometric top down look with tactical combat.

As others have mentioned, it wouldn't be such a bad idea for Obsidian to make it. Perhaps they could do a refresh like what has been done with the Baldur's Gates games?

I don't hate Bethesda. They make a certain kind of game that their fans like, whether or not it's my cup of tea. I do resent that they outbid Troika for the license when they had no intention of making a true Fallout game. The only reason they bought the rights to Fallout was to exploit the brand, which is what they've done and will continue to do. Would Civilization fans be upset if Bethesda bought the rights to Civ and then turned it into a FPS and called it Civilization 6? Yeah, I bet they would. It's the same thing. Add to that the fact that the first, real Fallout 3 was quite far along in development when Herve Caen screwed up Interplay and killed it, and I think the grudge against Bethesda is understandable.

The whole controversy could have been avoided had Bethesda simply made up a new brand for their post-apocalyptic game (Elder Scrolls: Apocalypse, or something like that) instead of exploiting someone else's.

I think how they handle the old games from this point forward will say a lot about them as a company. I have low expectations, but maybe they'll surprise me.
I don't like the idea. Not to say they cannot do something in a similar vein. But the game is a cult classic and that requires a certain touch to it that Bethesda wouldn't get.

Now the idea of Bethesda coming out with a free roaming, open world, steampunk RPG in the style of F3 and TES has a lot of merit. I think they need to get over having a "main quest", imo their main quests are rarely interesting and they are better with just flat world building. That's a good reason for them not to remake Arcanum. But maybe Bethesda should take a page from Ultima IV and have an open world game where the quest is more abstract. But that's off topic.

i know the feeling
personally i never get my hopes up on video games that come out that i like
cause i always end up disappointed that is why i wait for others to buy and review the game
i am more out to trust average every day players than company's trying to promote there games
between rushing with publishers and lack of time and funding or just flat out lack of skills games never are what they seem ^_-
if that ever made sense lol
No definitely not Bethesda. I would say let Larian Studios have a go at it. Divinity Original Sin was awesome.

An even better example might be Torment: Tides of Numenera. I don't know whether you've seen the promo gameplay video of that one, but it looks amazing.
If you want another Arcanum, fire up WorldEd and get to work, because it's the only way you'll get one. The future belongs to graphic-intensive stupidity. People waited a long time for an XCOM revival, look what they got. Maybe people like it, but it's not the old gold.
Elder Scrolls: Arcanum would be great.

No doubt Beth has had multiple internal discussions of whether to introduce firearms into the series.
Dwarven ruins are full of old mechanica anyway, so it isn't even a stretch.
Just something they probably won't do, because it'd alienate some fans.

Arcanum by bethesda.. would be the same.
I'd buy it, I'd play it, I'd love it. But it still wouldn't be the real thing.
Bethesda? No no no... while I love their TES series and had fun with Fallout 3 (can't compare it to FO1 & FO2 - it has nothing to do with the original games apart from the setting & the name), I don't think they are the right people for a remake/ sequel, unless we want to see another first person open world game set in the world of Arcanum.

If I were to choose one dev, that would be either CDprojekt (and probably that would mean a top quality 3d crpg) or Larian (that would mean a top quality isometric crpg - I love isometric view...). As for the other companies I don't know yet: I haven't played wasteland 2 yet to see what inxile can do and I'm waiting pillars of eternity to see what obsidian can do nowadays..
I don't get all the hate for Bethesda. I'm no particular fan of Bethesda titles (Skyrim is the only ES I could ever stomach, and even then I'm not half as enthralled by it as most) but I like what they've done with Fallout. The only way their version of Fallout is lacking is that it's a shoddy FPS with less tactical combat than its predecessors, although I think Fallout had awfully poor tactical combat. Fallout1+2 are mostly numbers games. I had a friend jokingly refer to them as "Quickload: The Game."

Fallout established an awesome lore and setting - I think it's one of the most remarkable works of science fiction of our time, but Bethesda ran with it and they've been pretty faithful really. If anything, at least someone is doing something with the Fallout license. Consider all the brilliant material that's still wallowing in limbo. That could have easily been Fallout.

That having been said, I don't think Bethesda would make for an appropriate developer for Arcanum. What Bethesda is getting really good at is making well realized places. Bioware does character and narrative and Bethesda is the master of setting. Those two are like polar opposites of one another, in fact - and as far as I'm concerned Bioware no longer exists. Arcanum is equal parts setting and narrative, two very integral aspects of the fiction. CDProjekt does both pretty well. Need I point to their adaptation of The Witcher? If anyone were to pick up Arcanum, I can think of no one better suited to the task than CDProjekt. My only criticism of CDProjekt is that they're not very good with the game part of their RPGs. Witcher 3 looks to have gameplay far surpassing its predecessors though.

Sequel or Remake? A remake would probably be best to start with, I suppose. Lord knows Arcanum could sure use an appearance facelift if nothing else, and an entirely overhauled combat system. And newer audiences would have to start from somewhere.

An appearance facelift? I don't think so! Look at the next screenshot:

I really like the graphics still to this day (high res patch enabled). There is so much detail to the world.. Maybe I'm a little oldschool myself, but definitely I can't mark arcanum's graphics as oldschool - it's only 15 tears old! I want to hear the opinion of the younger members on the subject though.

But I have to agree that the combat system could need an overhaul. Maybe it's the only thing that could use some polishing..
