Fisher-Price | My First X-COM

This was my first delve into the series and I played it to completion years ago. But revisiting after my first long experience with UFO Defense has revealed EU to be a needlessly frustrating and restrictive game in hindsight. In spite of good music and mood, not even the Long War mod can save it from being dumbed-down and saddled with egregious design decisions. In UFO, you can build multiple bases on which to research multiple projects; multiple skyrangers to respond to any and all threats; up to 14 soldiers on a single mission; any weapon or piece of equipment for anyone, regardless of stats; cooking 'nades and passing them between teammates to toss at faraway enemies; picking up equipment from corpses during battle and using them... the list goes on way too long for a review. In short, complete and utter control over every single aspect of the game. In EU, you're severely limited for mass appeal. You get only one base; only one research project at any time; only one skyranger to respond to multiple terror missions at once; only six soldiers per mission; item/class restrictions; no live battle pickups; restriction to two actions per soldier; reloading takes up an entire turn; a MUCH slower pace during battle phases.... And so on. The worst and most frustrating part of EU is what happens when enemies are revealed. In UFO, your soldier has time units, allowing for way more than only two actions to be taken in a single turn. This means if you're trying to flank and unwittingly expose another alien, they ARE exposed; more often than not, you'll have time units remaining to react! In EU, the second you've exposed any group when you're trying to set up a flank, they automatically get into cover and set themselves up against you WITHOUT taking their turn, even when your own phase remains and (more often than not) have used up your precious TWO actions, leaving your soldiers exposed and vulnerable! It's bad game design. This is why I can't get into EU anymore.

Great game

It's too late fo me... i bought this game since some year on steam... I always try on GoG first because no DRM, but it's very very too late :( Well, for people who don't have and like these games : Take it ! I recommend to use the mod 'Long War', who add lot of content in this game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_War_(mod) https://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/88/

Not as good as I remember

Played through this the first time on PS3. I remember it being hard enough that I had to restart a few times. And I was okay with that. Playing through it again on pc and I really don't remember it being so random. Maybe I was more tolerant of it back then, but now, I find it incredibly irritating. Enough to make me stop playing it. It doesn't help that the controls are kind of wonky on PC and the graphics aren't much to look at. Clearly, it was designed for consoles. I also don't like that I'm forced to wait for all the actions to play out. As in, I'd like to tell a unit to move and not have to wait for that to happen before I can switch to another unit. The game is just kind of clunky. If XCOM 2 comes to GOG, I'll pick that up. I'm sure it'll be better.

If you are into the game, use TLW mod

I played around 200hrs of this game on my PS3, 200hrs on PC (Steam + Long War Mod). It's really nice to see XCOM: Enemy Unknown here. A fresh breath into the turn-based Strategy game. You can carry 6 soldiers into the missions, all of them have 2 actions per turn, some classes have special actions (with extra-free actions) and your base - when not doing missions - has a minor building mechanics. The game is really good, it aged well imo (until you play XCOM 2, hopefully it'll be here as well). It'll add fear, satisfaction, rage and deception, it's hard but once you get a hand on it by the time you are halfway throught the game you should be 70% OP, which is why I recommend Long War mod. Once you are tired of playing the vanilla, go for the Enemy Within expansion which further expands with new classes, enemies and things alike. I'd say to give the game a go, one of the few good and ALIVE turn-based strategy games
