Description
XCOM: Chimera Squad delivers an all-new story and turn-based tactical combat experience in the XCOM universe.

After years of alien rule, humanity won the war for Earth. But when the Overlords fled the planet, they left their former soldiers behind. Now, five years after the events of XCOM 2, humans and aliens are working together to forge a civilization of cooperation and coexistence.

Welcome to City 31, a model of peace in a post-invasion world. However, not all of Earth's inhabitants support interspecies alliance. Chimera Squad, an elite force of human and alien agents, must work together to destroy the underground threats driving the city toward chaos.

Your agents are unique: each of them equipped with special tactical abilities and driven by a different motivation for joining Chimera Squad. Deploy targeted team members to investigate and combat the dangers that pervade the districts of City 31. Lead Chimera Squad through a new experience that innovates on XCOM's turn-based legacy, utilizing strategy, teamwork, and new breach-and-clear gameplay to complete your mission objectives.

The future of City 31 depends on you.

Unique Alien and Human Agents

Each of the 11 agents have their own distinct personality and tactical abilities, including species-specific attacks like the Viper’s tongue pull.

Specialized and Complementary Classes

Execute devastating combos by teaming the right agents and utilizing cooperative actions. The difference between mission success and failure can depend wholly on team composition.

Re-Envisioned Tactical Combat

Missions are structured as a series of discrete, explosive encounters, keeping the action intense and unpredictable.

Breach Mode

Shape the battlefield to your advantage with a new combat phase that injects your squad right into action. Strategically assign your agents to different entry points and coordinate their assault with a range of Breach-specific skills.

Interleaved Turns

An automatic initiative system slots individual agents and enemies into an alternating turn order, creating new strategic possibilities based on what unit is queued to act next—and what unit is at the greatest risk when they do.

Suspenseful Strategy Layer

Outside of combat, manage the operations of a high-tech HQ, where you must prioritize competing tasks, investigations, and agent assignments in the face of a ticking clock: the constantly rising unrest in the city’s various districts, driving City 31 closer and closer to total anarchy.

Wait for it to hit the bargain bin

My personal regrettable purchase of 2020 over on Steam. This is a story sequel to XCOM 2, but an entirely different genre. This is probably best described as a puzzle game with some tactical elements and RPG mechanics. The gameplay loop consists of your team breaching a room or otherwise closed-off area, entering bullet time, and solving a turn-based puzzle of killing the baddies and clearing the room. Rinse and repeat in the next room. The gameplay is not terrible, but it's sadly not exactly good either, and it gets repetetive really fast. Unfortunately this is the strongest point of the game. The story starts with a promising concept (baddies from XCOM 2 leave, leaving hybrids and the problem of integrating them behind) but falls flat in the execution with a completely predictable "baddies want to kill all nonhumans, let's stop them with the power of friendship" narrative. The characters are now center of the story (so there now is no permadeath), terribly one-dimensional because they are exclusively defined by two or three character traits each, and especially the dialogue is just cringy. It's clear that someone tried to recreate colonial marines from Aliens, but didn't understand their social dynamic and just created Mean Girls with guns. Graphics and Music are par for the XCOM course. Not special either way. Overall don't bother unless you are really a fan of the series, or are in a serious slump. For everyone else, the gameplay itself can be fairly enjoyable if you manage to shoot the game for five bucks or less.

X-COM : lighter and lighter

First let me say what this game isn't. It is not the next main line X-COM. What it is, however, is a lighter, both in intensity and stakes, take on X-COMs squad formula. And in that sense, it's fine for what it is. Pros - A lighter and more forgiving take on X-COM. Perfect for when you're not in the mood for a more weighty campaign. Cons - The combat definitely isn't as deep as X-COM 1 & 2, and especially in regards to combat prep/research etc. If X-COM2 was worth 59.99 as a new release, then Chimera Squad was certainly worth 19.99 when it came out. So overall I'm satisfied. As for people calling this 'woke'. It's got a vaporwave aesthetic, a fairly optimistic (if cliche) story, and the solution to your problems isn't 'kill all the ET's' . . . If that's all it takes to be woke than the term has lost all meaning.

No mod support for GOG version

Mods for this game are hosted almost exclusively on Steam workshop, so it's hard to even download them without owning it on Steam. But even if you manage to obtain them, they don't work. I followed the same procedure to manually install mods which worked with Xcom2. Please post to GOG forum if you figure out anything. Other than this the game is fine. I got stuck in the first boss mission because the difficulty jumped a lot, so I hoped to use some mods to help. I guess I shouldn't have picked Sacred Coil.

"XCOPS"

A fun little spinoff with a lighter tone and a Saturday morning cartoon style. XCOM's always been pulpy but this is outright comedic. I think it works but YMMV. Custom soldiers are replaced by 11 predefined agents with more personality and unique abilities. Base management is greatly reduced to focus on missions which consist of clearly defined room encounters beginning with a breach entry. Breach is well fleshed out and impressive to watch but the room delineation can feel artificial and removes the tension of unseen enemies. Overall it's a fun little game with impressive novelty at first but the narrower focus means repetition sets in sooner than in previous XCOM games. It's well worth the price but don't binge on it.

A good Training for the XCOM 1+2 Series

This Game is a logical/time sequel to XCOM 2 and is easier with fixed timeline, smaller maps and missions than the "original" XCOM Games, but its a fine game and a good choice to play it before buying/playing the XCOM 1 and 2 Series. You get a good impression of different types of weapons, tactics and skills of different Humans and Aliens and the basics of turn-based tacticals and you can play ally Aliens, which will be helpfully in/because there just enemies in the XCOM Series,
