A very fun shooter with a few flaws

First of all, I didn't play wolf3d back in the day, I'm a bit younger and the first fps I played was actually return to castle wolfenstein. So there's no rose tinted glasses here. There is a lot of fast paced action and hunting for secrets. The music is beautiful, in my opinion; Bobby Prince's work is phenomenal here. The graphics are really impressive for 1992, but the age was showing even a year and a half later when doom came out; still, it is amazing use of the hardware. The story really not that important, but the setting is great none the less. The biggest problem with the game is the level design which is directly tied to the limitations of the game engine: the levels are quite repetitive, there is not enough graphical variety. This is a problem not only for lacking "pretty" graphics, but it's difficult to place landmarks in levels by which the player can orient himself. For this reason it can be tiresome to play more than five or six levels in one sitting. Taking these flaws into consideration, it is still a very fun shooter in its own right, and I also recommend you play it for experiencing history. It must have been MINDBLOWING seeing a fast paced 3d game in the midst of a bunch of platformers and point and click adventure games on the pc at that time. The cornerstone of first-person shooter games.

The Grandfather of First Person Shooter

Wolfenstein 3D is as timeless and legendary as its more popular outstanding pupil, Doom, albeit it's probably the one of the two that's aged the worst. The premise is as simple as it gets: you're B.J. Blazkowicz, superspy/soldier in WWII. Get in enemy territory, take down all the Nasties in your way, go to the next level, rinse and repeat. The key to Wolf3D's success is in its gameplay basis: extremely basic and to-the-point yet undeniably addictive. Gunning Nasties down never gets old! Unfortunately the weakest aspect of this game is by far its level design. I understand the constrictions imposed by technical limitations and how much you could do with the engine at the time, but unfortunately Wolf3D's confusing maze-like levels will lead you to get lost very often. While I consider this gem a true gem and one of those you must play at least once in your life, it's hard to deny it gets old pretty quickly. I consider it a perfect game for short bursts and a little match every now and then, but if you try to beat all of its episodes (plus the Spear of Destiny expansion) in a row, you'll get bored very quickly. As another piece of advice: you should definitely play this in the ECWolf source port, as it's the most convenient modernized way to taste the original. Alternatively you can get a vast number of interesting recreations of Wolfenstein 3D in the shape of Doom mods.

Holds up well for a pre-Doom FPS

Wolf 3D holds up well for it's age but anyone who has played post Doom first person shooters is probably going to struggle with the movement in game. You can't strafe and turn at the same time which really takes some getting used to. Otherwise the gameplay is fine. You need to be careful as being too gung-ho will get you killed real quick. A few shots up close will see you go down. The environments can be a bit too maze like at times due to the limited wall textures making everything look the same, this does get better when you play the later missions as they added new textures to spice things up. If you have an interest in first person shooters, it's worth a quick blast through over the course of a few hours just to get a little slice of gaming history.
