World War II rages. The Nazis are planning to build an unstoppable, mutant army. On a mission to steal the secret plans, you were captured and imprisoned. Now, a lucky break gives you the chance to escape, but a maze of passages and trigger-happy Nazis stand in your way.

Developed by id Software in 1992, Wolfenstein 3D is a ground-breaking and critically acclaimed, World War II, first-person shooter action game that started the modern-day FPS genre.

Story

World War II rages. You are William ""B.J."" Blazkowicz, the Allies' most trusted agent. The Nazis are planning Operation Eisenfaust, a project to build an unstoppable, mutant army. Your mission was to steal the secret plans, but you were captured and imprisoned in Castle Wolfenstein. Now, a lucky break gives you the chance to make your escape, but a maze of passages and trigger-happy Nazis stand in your way.

'Spear of Destiny' Expansion Included

In this prequel to Wolfenstein 3D, you are William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, the Allies' most valuable agent. During the German Blitzkrieg of World War II, the spear that pierced the side of Christ is stolen from Versailles by the Nazis and secured in Castle Nuremberg. According to legend, no man can be defeated when he wields the spear. Your mission is to infiltrate the heavily guarded Nazi stronghold and recapture the Spear of Destiny before it’s too late.

Pretty Simplistic

This purchase includes Spear of Destiny, but not the mission packs. I played the game using the ECWolf source port, which provides smoother controls, higher resolutions, and an Automap. The strength of this game lies in its nostalgia factor. The pixelated graphics still hold up nicely, the music is decent, and the arcade-style sound effects are fun. However, gameplay-wise, it’s quite limited and tends to get repetitive — especially after the first episode. The secrets were probably groundbreaking at the time, especially with walls sliding open to reveal hidden areas. But most of the time, there’s no hint as to which walls are pushable, so I ended up “wall-humping” constantly. The sound effect that plays when you try to push a wall is also grating. Thankfully, it’s possible to disable it by creating a .txt file with a bit of code and loading it with the game's desktop executable. There’s also a bug that affected some pushable walls, preventing them from fully moving and locking me out of secrets. Episode 5 was the highlight of the game for me. It really shows Wolfenstein 3D at its best: the levels aren’t too short or too long, enemy placement is more fun and engaging, and secrets are mostly hidden behind more distinct wall textures. Spear of Destiny is essentially more of the same — just with some new textures, music, a different sound effect, and an ammo box item that gives more ammo than clips. The secret levels in Spear are insanely difficult and made me abandon the life system entirely, since I had to replay the game multiple times just to reach those levels again after running out of lives. I recommend trying the shareware version first before deciding whether to buy the full game.

Wolfenstein 3-D Got Me Psyched for FPS

Video review: https://youtu.be/Iqu0RTE5gaI After several experiments with design in Hovertank 3-D and Catacomb 3-D, id software would finally nail their particular brand of fast rendering technology, bloody action, and trademark edgy style in 1992's Wolfenstein 3-D. It would usher in a renaissance for the fledgling first-person shooter genre and inform the success of their next big hit in 1993's Doom. Check out how the game came to be, whether it's still worth playing, and the impact it left on the industry.

Great Classic

This one started FPS for me. At the time, I was hooked. This was a fun simple game to go back and play. The most difficult level is still frustrating as a single gunshot will get you killed, just as I remember it. Spear of Destiny also as I remembered. More of the same, but still fun.

The very first FPS

I remember playing this game back in the '90s on an old 486 with my friends... I bought it again just for nostalgia's sake but it's clearly outdate on every front: graphics, sounds, gameplay, extras... I only suggest you to buy if you miss your childhood (or if you direly need to shoot pixelated nazis).

For those who appreciate retro classics

If you give this less than 5 stars, especially if you give it 3 stars then you're clueless and your opinion is irrelevant. This is video gaming history...and it reshaped everything. Giving this a 3 is like giving Einstein's theory of realitivity a 6 or 7 out of 10... Although, I imagine video game history is less relevant or important than that...everything is relative... I played this back in the 90s near when it first came out. I originally thought it was DOOM as my friend had some version of DOOM that he was playing. I quickly discovered that this wasn't DOOM... However. I still found it to be very enjoyable and played it for many years. "EIIIII-!" "SPHYON!" Anyone who thinks that they can objectively rate this beneath a 5 is a fool, especially a 4...Doom 1 and 2 which inspired every other great shooter in the world was inspired by this game... (It was the same guys behind it's creation...) Of course it's dated, do you expect it to be fresh/ new and revolutionary for the next 30 years? The game is ancient... video games have long ago taken from it, copied it and done more and have done it better... But of course that is an evolutionary process... Calling this dated is like saying single cell organisms were dated.... This game was a work of genius. If you play this, take it for what it is, don't expect it to be on par with modern FPS shooters, I mean that's common sense.... It still has a charm/ thrill of it's own. It has a classic fun sound track, and the villians are still fun to play against. The game was always a little bit goofy but was taken more seriously back in the day as it was the most realistic shooter...It was meant to be a little funny, unlike Doom... It had made far more advances than MOST if not ALL shooters (since for it's time). This game and then Doom is a work of pure genius, DOOM giving the illusion of variable heights which wasn't in WOLF3D but WOLF3D inspired DOOM. I'm sure someone is rating DOOM below a 5 here too...
