Alarm, Mein Leben.

I just finished the whole thing for the first time and I must admit that I am extremely exhausted mentally. I managed to finish 6 episodes of Wolfenstein and the main campaign of Spear of Destiny. Only once i use the guide to find the key hidden in the wall. Countless hours that I have spent in these mazes ... When it comes to the two packages of additional missions for Spear of Destiny, at first I was shocked that to complete many of these levels you have to lick each wall because the keys and sometimes the exits are hidden in them . After some time, however, you can see a pattern, by such walls usually lies a dead rat or a corpse and you can guess that there is something hidden here, but I would not be able to do it without using the walkthrough. It took me over 20 hours for sure (I don't count but I think so). It is certainly worth experiencing at least once. Will I try again someday, probably not. While playing this, I realized one thing, what a great work the classic Doom is. I've always known it, but only now do I see it in full. Still, it was worth it, I recommend 5/5.

Honest review

This is the first video game I ever played. It holds a special place in my heart. But I will be honest, it's not my favorite game, nor do I think it is the best (FPS) game. I legitimately enjoy playing through the first episode or two, but then kind of lose interest with the monotony. For sheer gameplay value, I think an honest review for me would float somewhere around a 3 or 4, but I give it a solid 4 stars for its value as a precursor to the games that followed, namely Doom. I think it's worth playing, it's fun, but you shouldn't really pay more than a buck or a buck-fifty on it. If you're not already in the know, I think the best way to get this up and running is to download the free source port ECWolf. It will make running this quick and easy.

Focus on just Spear of Destiny

Spear of Destiny is about as good in comparison to Wolfenstein 3D, even if they're a year apart. They play the same, the guns are the same, some minor boss differences and only map designs. Regardless, Spear of Destiny provides the same level of caliber as Wolf3D. What brings Spear of Destiny down, however, is the mission packs. Avoid them. The reason I say that, is because they're the most uninspiring expansions of Spear of Destiny there. The visuals look a bit primitive, the enemy designs have changed where they looked almost unrecognizable from how you saw them in Wolf3D and base Spear of Destiny. The bosses are recycled and poorly designed, nothing too memorable about them except maybe the cool boss in The Axe. The main problem is level designing, good god what a mind twister dealing with them were. Get used to the idea of trying to find the secret door because that's the gimmick with the mission packs. There was even a couple maps in both of them, where the whole level was nothing but just sliding walls around. There was even a map where you could bury the gold key with by accidentally sliding a square block over it! Case in point, the mission packs to Spear of Destiny offered absolutely nothing to the table. It's only worth a brief look to see the differences in changes between them and the base game of Spear of Destiny. Don't even worry about missing out on any story details or so because even the endings of the mission packs, recycled off from Spear of Destiny. The mission packs are just huge wastes of time, so I'd recommend sticking to just Spear of Destiny before going on to Wolfenstein 3D.

A classic, what more do you need to say?

It's on sale often enough, so do give it a try. The benefit to the DOS original over many of the console ports, for those who don't know, is that the enemy sprites aren't set to always face you. This means it is possible to be stealthy, which is great for when you're low on health or ammo. For that reason alone I prefer it to Doom.

A very fun shooter with a few flaws

First of all, I didn't play wolf3d back in the day, I'm a bit younger and the first fps I played was actually return to castle wolfenstein. So there's no rose tinted glasses here. There is a lot of fast paced action and hunting for secrets. The music is beautiful, in my opinion; Bobby Prince's work is phenomenal here. The graphics are really impressive for 1992, but the age was showing even a year and a half later when doom came out; still, it is amazing use of the hardware. The story really not that important, but the setting is great none the less. The biggest problem with the game is the level design which is directly tied to the limitations of the game engine: the levels are quite repetitive, there is not enough graphical variety. This is a problem not only for lacking "pretty" graphics, but it's difficult to place landmarks in levels by which the player can orient himself. For this reason it can be tiresome to play more than five or six levels in one sitting. Taking these flaws into consideration, it is still a very fun shooter in its own right, and I also recommend you play it for experiencing history. It must have been MINDBLOWING seeing a fast paced 3d game in the midst of a bunch of platformers and point and click adventure games on the pc at that time. The cornerstone of first-person shooter games.
