I haven't been able to sit in front of the PC to game for over an hour until now. Such a simple old school FPS but so unique and addictive.

Really fun old game
If you like old school boomer shooter style, 2.5D FPS games than you will really enjoy Witchaven. It has most things you would want in an old school FPS game from the mid 90's, the maps are fun to explore despite the game being graphically challenged, and killing monsters can be very challenging on higher difficulty levels. You get the both the orginial version of the game and the Enhanced Edition, both versions run in DOSBOX. What is great about the enhanced edition is you have a settings program that you run that allows you to tweak the graphics to your liking by selecting different graphics API's as well as scaling options. There's a bunch of different options to choose from, each one changes or improves the look of the game in slightly different ways. I for one, like these kind of options to mess with, I find it fun to play for a while at different settings.

One of Capstone's better ones.
Capstone was a mixed bag developer. They produced plenty of garbage like the Trump Castle games, and Operation Body Count, but they also made excellent titles like Corridor 7. This falls more in line with the latter. Using the Build Engine that powers Duke Nukem 3-D and Blood, Witchaven further sets itself apart from the rest of the "Doom Clone" crowd by focusing on melee combat in a high fantasy setting. Its a bit stumbly in places, and there are pitfalls abound, but I gotta give them props for going in a different direction and largely succeeding! You have a variety of weapons, potions and spells at your disposal as you do battle with monsters that look like something out of a Ray Harryhausen film. The included enhanced edition even sets the controls to be more inline with a modern FPS.

More fun than I remember
I was introduced to Witchaven on a shareware/demo floppy disk that came with those PC Gaming magazines back in the 90's. What I remembered well was how realistic the hands and creatures looked. Did you know the monsters were actually made out of clay and photographed? Even the evil witch was designed from a team member's looks. This was fun to play without using real brain power, so it was quite easy. Finished it in 12hrs. The story was typical for that era and not much creativity went into it. Remember, some studios were more driven on technical capabilities back then. So glad GoG got this in their store! I would recommend buy this in the Witchaven 1 + 2 bundle to have the full experience. A few things you need to consider when playing this game: - save frequently. yes, it still have random crashes every now an then. At least save at the beginning of every level. - the mouse aim is not smooth. So, contain your frustration when flying, aiming with the magic bow or casting spells. - there is a map. just press the TAB key. - it takes a while to get used to the keyboard layout. Have fun!

Simple, good fun.
As I haven't played the game prior to picking it up on GOG, I hope my review can give some insight without the tint of nostalgia. I haven't finished it yet but from what I have played I can say it's simple and fun to play. The aesthetic and atmosphere is top-notch. The Enhanced build offered by GOG means, coming from modern games, that you can pick this up and dive straight in without having to get used to outdated controls. There's a bit of clunkiness, hence the four stars, but I feel that's inherent to games of this era. At the end of the day, slashing through hordes of enemies doesn't get much better than this. At full price, it's certainly worth the price of admission, and on sale (at £1.99 as I bought it) it's without a doubt a must-try.
