Atmosphere to Burn

With the new 'modern' controls, this is the way this game was meant to be played. This is not the most polished FPS (not surprisingly given how early it was in the Build engine's reign) but it's got some nice animation and fun creatures to fight, a surprising amount of spells and potions, and is certainly ambitious for being mostly melee combat in a genre usually all about shooting. This game is just fun to explore in and reminds me of Heretic: a grim dark fantasy world with little details to immerse you like bats flying across the sky, dingy bookcases, stained glass windows, and plenty of traps. There's something really satisfying about slaying monsters, dodging fireballs, and hopping platforms. Old school with rough edges but a lot of heart!

A game I've been waiting for a long time

I have great memories of this game even though it has aged very badly. In my opinion the sword fighting system is still fun, even if the magic system and the configuration of the keys is inconvenient as well as saving and loading a game. The original version is almost unplayable on modern machines. Fortunately, the game also features the much more enjoyable Enhanced Version. There remain some bugs including a softlock in map 5, also present in the Enhanced version: this one is solvable through an unofficial patch. See ETTiNGRiNDER's Fortress site.

Duke Hexem - nuking the witch

Witchaven is a dark medieval melee fps, where you are hunting down an evil sorceress through gloomy dungeons filled with vile creatures and subtle satanic innuendos. You’ll be punching dragons in the face, hacking butt-naked goblins to bits and dodging deadly traps. Throughout a series of 25 levels, you’ll be swinging your weapons, which will eventually break down, finding new weapons, guzzling down hundreds of potions for health, strength boost, etc., finding more or less rewarding loot, finding secrets, avoiding traps, dying in traps, running down the stairs, running up the stairs, using barrels for jump pads, finding keys, opening doors and so on. The combat is quite clunky and might make you want to refund the game. Also the weapons are mighty unbalanced, and most of them feel just plain pointless - you’ll do fine with just the basic dagger, short sword or putting your dukes up. The bow is so weak that you’ll go numb. Sure, you have a collection of spells, but casting them is so tedious, that you’ll just stick with the good old hack and slash. What is good then? Why not just play Hexen or Heretic? Witchaven does have a distinctive feel to it. The atmosphere is spot-on gritty and the level design is great. Maps are quite vast and offer a thrill of exploration, even though it is not that rewarding - only the hero time-power up and magic sword, which is one of the coolest fps melee weapons, are actually worth it. The game lasts roughly about 6 to 8 hours, and after you’ve finished it, you’ll go ”that was quite alright”. Yeah, not great, not terrible. Oh, and the game has a system for leveling up, but it is pretty vague.

Great game for what it is!

Anyone who is a fan of the heretic/hexen series should give this game a whirl. A bit clunky and quite arduous but as a fan of this style I can say it is a must play for anyone who is a fan of this genre. Great levels with design in mind a few bugs as most pc games have. Overall I'm going to say 4 out of 5 due to the enhanced editions controls being well... not so enhanced. Given the games age I understand but I would like to be able to implement the mouse wheel for more functions.

I had more fun then expected

I remember seeing this game ages ago in some magazine but back then I still had Amiga computer and couldnt play it. Nearly 30 years later I got it on GOG and played through for the first time. Just finished it. Enjoyable levels filled with fantasy monsters that you slain. Great stuff. I got what I expected. Levels are well designed so you dont need search internet to get to know where the key is hidden or something like that. Very cool game! Now lets get thart second part going, shall we?
