Way of the Hunter

Slow, careful and methodical... wind and distance calculation, correct firearm energy and shot placement is key. This is the hunting game hunters have been waiting for. The small details. Wind and Smell. The smallest of sounds, a cracking twig. An appropriate and well timed call. All matters. No more running around with the biggest gun in the cabinet blasting everything in sight. Choose your animal carefully - improve population genetics and animal quality, and with it your trophies... and it takes time. Patience is the key in any hunt. This aint theHunter: Call of the Rambo... this is proper hunting. The guns are fantastic. The environments and weather are the most immersive in a hunting game out there. The quality of the animals is second-to-none. This is proper hunting.

This game is currently entirely broken on GOG. The developers updated the savegame system and it has resulted in the game starting a new save every time you play, with no way of continuing progress between play sessions. I don't understand why they haven't halted sales temporarily while they sort this out. I don't think they have even officially acknowledged the issue (their mods on Discord are very much aware of it, though). If you don't care about this rather shady behaviour, you can use GOG Galaxy to lock the game to the previous version (1.0c) and play that until they eventually fix this in a patch. Bear in mind that it's already been several days, so presumably it could take a while.

Very chill game, perfect for couch-gaming with a controller! Playing this with Xbox controller, and I definitely prefer that in a slow game like this. Good for the driving too, with analog input for throttle/steering. Very good controls layout! Don't worry about updates - right now we have 1.7 on GOG, and that corresponds to 1.20 on Steam, so we have the newest official patch in here too! Graphics look great, amazing immersion while out sneaking around in the tall grass. Playing this on a 3060, and at 4k (DLSS) with most settings on highest I get 35-50fps, and that works very well on controller since all movements get so smooth. Performance-patches are in the works so will probably be better in a near future. I've only played it for an hour, trying how it works and runs, but I'll wait for some more patches/content before continuing. Game could use some more work on sound balancing and sound settings, and it would be nice if you could choose different profiles/saveslots without having to delete/move the savefolder manually... Very nice and ambitious hunting game, and it's the only one we have on GOG so it's without competition in here!

It's still early and there's a lot more patching to be done (two done since release, so far), but this is a much more real and immersive hunting simulator than theHunter. Plus it's DRM-free on GOG! What more could a hunting fan want? If you've the patience to hunt in these realized maps, you'll have patience with this new dev team to patch things up over time. Take the chance!
