Description
For the first time in over 20 years, we are heralding the return of a much loved piece of gaming history with the classic RPG, Wasteland!

Mutants. Again. Even more than there were last time: they seem to materialize out of the very grains of the radioactive desert sand. Venomous yellow eyes. The black gunmetal glint of Uzis as they close in for the kill. There's nowhere to run, and nothing to rely on but your MAC 17 machine gun. What a way to save the human race.

The year is 2087, eighty-nine years after an all out nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union turned vast swaths of the Earth into a hellish wasteland where survival is a daily struggle against thirst, hunger, radiation sickness, ravaging raiders, and mutants - always mutants. You are a Desert Ranger, one of a band of stalwart lawmen born from the remnants of a U.S. Army detachment who survived the nuclear holocaust by holing up in a maximum security prison. You may wear ragtag uniforms and carry make-shift weapons, but the Desert Rangers are the only law left in what was once the American southwest.

Now something more secretive and sinister than the usual roving bands of mutants and raiders is menacing humanity, and it's your job to investigate. Recruit the help you need, follow any leads you find, but beware. The wasteland is lawless desert and a lonely place, and the choices you make will shape the world around you. Better choose wisely. Your life depends on it.
  • The godfather of the modern post-apocalyptic cRPG.
  • One of the first reactive and immersive worlds that delivered persistent consequences to player choices.
  • Featuring toggle-able modern updates such as new paragraph voice over, new music tracks and updated portraits. Play in classic mode to get the original experience.
  • Awarded "Adventure Game of the Year" in 1988 by Computer Gaming World.
  • Predecessor to the 20 year awaited sequel Wasteland 2.

set in a post nulclear adventure...

this game is like a survival, sometimes simulation but best of all an deep crpg, unforgiving combat which kind of puts realism in the game, like if in real life this could happen to you, you could get your head blown off like a blood sasuage, die along with your mates in the horrible wasteland full of unexpecting things every turn, every attack or running is a consequence, i see this game as a playground with rpg and surivival mechanics, rather than a deep story i would say, like i always try to speak to people to see their lives, upgrade my rangers levels, to make them an unstoppable force, until one gets his face blown off by a grenade or something, this game is a playground but then an you must complete the main quest of setting everything right, that is if you make it very far, i must have died multiple times, but theres an charm that i want to start it over again, its brutal, its unforgiving, it will drive you insane but you will learn to put up with it and fight to the last of your rangers, before fallout we had this game, i will play again 12 blood sausages out of 12

Nothin' but love for this classic

Don't want to go on and on about how great it is - plenty of other reviewers have already done that. Even if you are not a big RPG fan you really should enjoy this gem. Two minor criticisms: - The paragraph narration they added could have been a bit better, it bit more animated such as this fantastic series made by "mynameisnotlilly" on Youtube: IvYcu5qaO-s (add the usual prefix). But let me be clear, I think it's wonderful they added this feature. - And if you choose the hi-res portraits, although they really are nice, the are NOT animated. I really think the meager animation of the originals really breaths extra life into the experience, so consider moving back and forth with the hi res portraits to see which you like better.

Age Is Just An Attribute

Wasteland is a great adventure into one of the earliest post-apocalyptic video game worlds. So long as the player adheres closely to the included and outside guides, they are in for some fun exploits in nuclear desolation. The gameplay follows principles of the tabletop RPG, Tunnels & Trolls. Its digital adaptation here appears to be rather good, allowing for a variety of choices on how to build and manage an effective squad. All choices are important and can lead to many early deaths at the start of the game, as well as some sudden deaths in the later game. When the player can survive consistently, there is a good amount of content to experience in the Wasteland. Exploring each location is always interesting, with each of them hosting some amount of side quests and other entertaining encounters. The main quest grants the player a good tour of the world map. The final area serves as a comprehensive test of a squad's resources and capabilities. Its graphics are primative, requiring imagination akin to what a text adventure demands to fully immerse oneself into the game. The original and updated portraits of characters are quite good and offer some personality. The user interface can be difficult to adjust to, given that all of the controls are spread across many regions of the keyboard. The included fan-made soundtrack is very good, offering some appropriate ambience and dramatic movements to flesh out the experience. The story is a bit light on content, but it contains challenging imagery, moral corruption, and sci-fi gizmos that all make for a memorable journey. Despite its ancient release date, Wasteland is recommended to anyone with an interest in the setting and has the bravery to dive into an old-school RPG. May the true Bloodstaff guide the way to victory!

Running in windowed mode

In answer to 'sabre31': Yes you can run in windowed mode. You must manually edit the DOSBOX config file. It will be here (Windows XP/Vista): C:Local Settings%USER%Local SettingsApplication DatainXile entertainmentWastelandwl.conf or here (Linux): ./drive_c/users/<USERNAME>/Local Settings/Application Data/inXile entertainment/Wasteland/wl.conf Change the line 31 (no quotes): "fullscreen=true" to "fullscreen=false" That should do the trick. On my Linux, the DOSBOX seems to work OK, contrary to some complaints of others (pb with save), but I've only tested briefly.

Windows 8.1 Mouse Stutter Fix

Install the patch below from Microsoft, and following the instructions under "How to extend this update to other games" to add the path and filename of wasteland.exe with the value NoDTToDITMouseBatch in the correct registry key. Mouse pointer stutters or freezes when you play certain games in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 support.microsoft.com/kb/2908279
