Base game is boring dont bother. This is an ampty boring world with conversation choices that are meaningless. The DLC looks like it could convert this game into something fun but I dont want to take the chance of being disapointed again. To release a boring unfinished base game and then multiple paid for DLC feels a bit scummy.
I’ve tried so many HOMM3 clones over the years and regularly been disappointed. Wartales is the one that finally does it justice. It’s a must play! I love so much about the game but I do have to call out how perfect the battle music is. Whoever made that - thank you!!!
Played for 30 minutes or so and already uninstalled it.
There is absolutely no on-boarding at all. No tutorial, no hints, no tips, no manual to read, no guidance of any sort.
I browsed the options menu and saw there was a setting for when to show tips, which was set to once per save, which would imply they actually had tips somewhere, didn't see any.
Selected my opening game options and party and started the game, which started with my party on the world map. So I waited for something to happen... and nothing did. Umm ok. Well I guess I click to move. There's something shiny let me try clicking on that, and another party approaches me. Ahh combat, ok, I guess this is where we start learning. But no. Just a quick comment about turn order and that's it. I move my guys in to attack, had my archer fire at one and it looked like she hit my own person. Nothing explaining why, or what risks came with ranged combat firing into a melee crowd, nothing. Got poisoned, no info about status effects.
Killed the 2 bandits and... just back to the world map. Got a menu with exp gain and ability to repair armor. Is that gonna be important? Something I always have to do? No idea. No dialog, no instructions to head anywhere to start a story, complete dead silence.
Well there's a horse stable nearby, let me try that. The party gets there and a new screen opens up showing the people in the stable. Don't see my party anywhere, and clicking around does nothing. Guess I click on a person? Ok some dialog where they'll give me some free horseshoes if I buy a pony. Well I already have one, but hey let me buy another I guess? The guy says I definitely need to make sure to put the shoes on. I figure ok, some mechanic I'm about to learn? I buy some shoes for my starting pony too and go to the horses. Find the inventory and click on the shoes... and it replaces the travel pack my original horse had. What the heck? I guess I don't need these after all. Didn't learn anything, no popup on how the inventory works, how equipment works, nothing. Just lost carrying capacity on my pony since I got it shoes.
I try walking to the next town and don't see anything but traders wandering through. So I look at my options and try "making camp" or something as it says it's where we can chat with our party. Well, the party's there, along with my (now 2) ponies, and a crafting bench? Can't talk to any of the party, there's no info on crafting, nothing.
At this point I've had enough. There's no manual to read, no tutorial, no starting goal or objective, no tips, no info on game mechanics or menus, ...nothing.
Currently 7 bits of available DLC... but no tutorial. Absolutely ridiculous priorities.
