Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
I bought this game when it came out. The Heroe system is quite good, better than Warcraft 3 for instance.
RTS side is a bit weaker BUT there is a lot of different sides available.
The only true problem with this game is that heroes become so strong at high level that you don't even need troups what make the game very unbalanced in multiplayer mode.
If you would like a good and smart solo RTS : Buy this one!
PS : Excuse my english because it's not my native langage.
This use to be my favourite RTS and perhaps still is. You control a hero who you can level and who can become quite powerful. Futhermore, it's pretty much standard RTS. No complex tech trees or lots of buildings, but a fine choice of races, spells and classes. If the gameplay was any deeper I'd have rated it 5 stars for sheer awesomeness. Still worth the purchase though. Includes a stellar soundtrack and a great campaign.
Warlords Battlecry series is among the worst underrated series of all times!
Combining RTS and RPG with its own setting, each WB is a unique experience.
In this game you will find several races, each with its own style and units (even the elf subtypes, who has similar units, play very differently) including:
The Barbarians, who mainly has few units but produce them en masse,
The Demons, who has powerful but expensive units, who can utilize fallen enemies' souls to summon more of their kind into battle
The Undead, who can produce basically a single unit but upgrades that unit into some of the most powerful units
The Dark Dwarves, who rely on siege machines and golems,
The Knights, who rely on cavalry
and command powerful units such as variety of dragons or each race's Titan!
...and you will have the option to shape your hero into whatever you want:
A power house warrior who does not relent, even at the sight of a mighty dragon or titan,
A charismatic merchant who spends less to command larger and more powerful armies that fight stronger,
A fearsome assassin, whose poisonous attacks can kill at a single deadly strike
A powerful mage, with spells that decimate armies and change the tide of battle.
...you will also gain items that provide various bonuses, including set items,
...conquer land and gain artifacts that supply a variety of features
All of this, through a series of adventures that shape the world!
Not to mention the awesome voice overs!
If you like RTS and fantasy settings, stop reading and buy the game, you won't regret it!
Compared to one and two, graphics are much improved (WB1 is almost unplayable due to ugly).
The missions are varied and interesting. The story is ok. The game is a bit short, but whatever.
The balance of the units is excellent, and the RTS is actually fun and challenging. This title beats Warcraft with one hand tied behind it's back.
Now to the sad part; they dumbed down the hero leveling system. WB1 and WB2 leveling system were unique and incredibly well balanced - although your heroes had just a little to much HP, making them a bit to overpowered, and, ironically, the heroes have less HP is WB3, the one thing they did right - and now it is just the "good" old DND 3E style "Focus on just one skill hurr durr". If only they had kept the hero leveling system instead of exchanging it for this crap :(
Had this on disc for years and its a fun little rts/rpg, with a MASSIVE amount of replayability. I noted the comments of someone else on summoning spells having a duration timer on summoned units. Yes this would make a massive difference, a strong hero with summoning skills (necromancer geezer, im looking at you.....yes you) can easily rise to power quickly, so i see it as a rebalancing issue.
Doesnt need a high spec to run, its 2d graphics ran fine on my old laptop with only built in chipset. Great fun at a bargain price! Give it a go, if you like old school 2d rts or action rpg, i think you will like!
