Warhammer: Mark of Chaos - Gold Edition

First, the cons: - Although the story is ok, the campaigns are somewhat underwhelming, not that much fun and exceedingly easy; little more than a game of aggroing solitary enemies with your ranged units, really. Why not just make a proper battle setup on missions, instead of a series of unchallenging encounters with stray enemies? - The models look fine on the battlefield, but are too rough-looking to be used in cutscenes, and probably looked like it in 2014 as well. - The soundtrack is one of the worst cases of absolutely phoning it in, with Jeremy Soule on autopilot in an utterly uninspired brass and drums dross. Everybody knows how much better he can do, which just makes this OST sound even worse. - Pathfinding can be a little iffy, especially during sieges. And now the pros: - Skirmish mode is awesome and addictive, even just against the AI. Hours and hours of fun to be had building and customizing your armies and pitting them against enemies, much like your little virtual Warhammer figurine collection. - Much like the sound effects, the voice acting is excellent. The Empire campaign even boasts Earl "LeChuck" Boen. - The units' non-magical special abilities are really cool. Even if they didn't have a practical effect, it just feels 'realistic' when they're used. - While not as sleek and polished as its more recent Total War counterpart, the game is a terrific plunge into the chaotic maelstrom of a proper Warhammer battlefield, and the heroes aren't overpowered.

I loved Mark of Chaos when it was relesed and I love it even more today on GOG. Borderline genius combination of game mechanics from games like Spellforce, Warcraft 3 and Total War in to a RTS RPG in the Warhammer Fantasy Battle world. What's not to love! People are complaining that it's not running on Windows 10, which is strange because on my Win10 PC everything is running smooth. Bay it, PLAY IT!

This game is in the line of many well done Warhammer real time tactic games. "Shadow of the Horned Rat" was probbly first, then came "Dark Omen", which, for me, was a real beauty of a game with it´s 3dfx support. Now "Mark of Chaos". It lets you chose the different unit types which you take into battle, upgrade them (a bit) and also heroes with a skilltree. Graphics are still OK today, only the cutscene videos look very grainy.. Story and dialogues are well done, tactics are there. Different units with different strenghts and weaknesses. Small drawbacks are hard to read mouse over text on high resolution displays and a bit of randomness IF a cannon hits or misses. If an enemy canon hits your units, you can better restart the mission due to high losses. The hero duels are a nice mini game in-game. Not the best thing there is, but since it´s mostly optional, it´s fun. This game rocks! I play it on Win11 with a 3840x1600 resolution, no problems so far!

Fact this game is bomb. The stories are entertaining and the gameplay is absolutely addicting. The only drawbacks: - In siege battles you can't plan ahead thanks to the good old Fog of War and you need several attempts until everything works out as you want. - The camera is not always easy to align with what is happening - often it is enough to gather a large army and blindly attack the enemy, real strategy is rarely needed. - In game cutscenes are at 240p. Which looks incredibly bad in 1080p resolution. Nevertheless, the game has entertained me far more than any Total War Warhammer part so far. Highly Recommended! 8/10 even today. Die einzigen Mankos: - In Belagerungs Schlachten kann man dank des guten alten Fog of War nicht vorplanen und man braucht so mehrere Anläufe bis alles klappt was man will. - Die Kamera lässt sich nicht immer gut auf das geschehen ausrichten - oft reicht es aus eine große Armee zusammen zu fassen und blind auf den Gegner los zu stürmen, echte Strategie, braucht man selten. - In Game Cutscenes sind auf 240p. Was in 1080p Auflösung unglaublich übel aussieht. Trotzdem hat mich das Spiel bislang weit mehr als jeder Total War Warhammer Teil unterhalten. Absolut Empfehlenswert! 8/10 selbst heute noch.

This is a great release from GOG! Mark of Chaos and its expansion are some of my all time favourite gaming experiences. Absolutely love this and have been itching to play it again since Windows 7 broke my disc installation way back when. Very happy to report that this is working for me in Win 10 (I've got v1903 currently) with pretty recent nVidia drivers v441.87 (released in Jan 2020). Best thing is that the game's running at 4K resolution too, and watching the atmospheric cinematics again just drives home how great an experience this was (and is again)! Thank-you GOG for this gem!
