Absolute WH40k classic

This is one of the best series of RTS games from my childhood/teenhood. Do yourself a favour and get them, if you are a fan of the genre.

Questionable port of one of the best RTS

Dawn of War is probably my favorite RTS game to date. The base game is a pretty by-the-numbers "do a mission, watch a cutscene" type game with a mediocre story, but it's not bad. The first expansion, Winter Assault, is a bit better, letting you play two different campaigns. Then, you've got Dark Crusade, which has eaten hundreds of hours of my life. For Dark Crusade, the campaign is a fairly open ended war where you're directing where you attack next, which determines what battles you fight, and holding various regions gives you different bonuses, a formula which is so fun I'm surprised it hasn't become the default for RTS. Soulstorm is kind of a sidegrade, with a bit less polish but more playable factions. Overall, excellent games. The GoG version leaves a bit to be desired, unfortunately. The games are a bit crashy and unstable at certain points, which doesn't seem to be a problem with the other versions, and there's some weirdness with the multiplayer options that other reviews have more information on. Overall, though, still a great game.

The best voice acting in a video game?

Much as I rack my brain, I can't for the life of me think of a more endearing legacy of voice acting than those who performed for the Warhammer 40K: Dawn Of War tetralogy. And aside from StarCraft, has there been a better real-time strategy game on PC? Even without the amazing mods, it bests any modern-day RTS you can throw at it. It's just so damn good, and I'm happy to finally have it back DRM-free. Thanks, GOG!

It's Dawn of War... again.

It's dawn of war, which is a phenomenal but elderly game. The basis is still rock solid and it's a fantastic wh40K RTS that plays differently to all the other sequels for reasons only relic can explain. the game is fun and there is still a very active mod community around Soulstorm. In terms of modding, please ignore those who say mods don't work as they very much do. Compared to steam it is not currently as good for Soulstorm mods in that specifically the mod manager application is designed for steam so the fog of war cannot be turned off. It also does not work on the DVD original copies. To be very clear here - this is absolutely not a GoG problem, it is not a scam, it is just the way the 3rd party application works - Perhaps the creator of mod manager will fix this in time, but who knows? I had to manually use the large address awareness (LAA) from moddb patch to alter the exe file manually to allow it to be a 4GB executable and not mod manager. You still get enhanced camera zoom, but there is fog of war as that's defined on the map itself. You could potentially remove all of these manually if you are playing either with friends or solo, as then map compatibility across the internet is not an issue. Alas, all hopes of this being a 64b version have gone, and ultimately at the time of writing if you want to play the mods then the better bet is to get soulstorm for £3 when it is on sale as a standalone product on steam.

Added more bugs

I still have the original release, and I have to say, the GOG version crashes far more often. Not sure why, but it crashes to desktop about every hour - not counting the instances that I clicked the "Commander" button on the planetary map screen, thereby eliciting a CTD as well.
