Playing the STORY MODE would be a great option for all those people that don't want to deal with hardcore puzzles. You won't miss much of the story but at the same time most of puzzles will be easier, require less conditions to be unlocked and you will deal with much less inventory objects. Some passages have been cut but the big part of the game is still there. If you are among those who gave up because the game felt too difficult this is also a good opportunity to give it a try again. Also you can still try the old school mode again once you have completed the story mode.
In a future not too far away, one Artificial Intelligence has prevailed over all other AIs and their governments. Society has migrated to a permanently integrated reality connected to a single neural network that continuously optimizes people's experiences by processing personal data.
Nathan, an outsider still refusing to comply with the new system, makes a living off the grid as a smuggler of modded hardware and cracked software. Geared with his custom headset, he is among the few that can still switch AVR off and see reality for what truly is.
He shares an apartment in the city with his girlfriend Jay, a talented AVR graffiti writer whose drones have been bit-spraying techno-color all over the augmented space in the city.
Waking up one morning, Nathan discovers that Jay disappeared overnight, but not before leaving a cryptic message on their bathroom mirror.
Having accidentally broken his custom headset, Nathan is now disconnected and determined to find out what happened to Jay, but he soon finds himself tangled up in an unexpected journey involving Jay's hacker group and a guild of AVR technomancers.
Travelling around the world, he'll have to deal with hardware graveyards, digital archeology, tribes of cryptoshamans, and virtual reality debauchery.

It's a great game, but there's a bug when you are on a boat, some of the items from your inventory disappear and I got stucked forever :( can't go over because of that and had to start from the beginning
In the late 90s I was totally obsessed with the LucasArts adventures, and while many have tried to revive this ailing genre since then, I have found all of their attempts leaving much to be desired. Until now.
'Virtuaverse' initially appealed to me because of its heavy cyberpunk theme and promising-looking screenshots. I waited until the GOG Summer Sale to pick this up, but had I waited just one more day I could have got it for free in a giveaway! I'm a bit annoyed I missed that opportunity. But that is by-the-by...
Having played and completed the game, I can say this is absolutely my favourite point-and-click adventure of the 21st century. 'Virtuaverse' takes what made the LucasArts adventure games special and brings those elements into the 1920 x 1080 format. It just gets it right. This is a true work of art. The graphics, interface and music are first-rate. There are parts of the game which remind me so strongly of 'The Dig', 'Indiana Jones & The of Atlantis' and 'Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge', it almost feels like you're replaying them, within the context of some kind of surreal dream. The story is also highly engaging if you are a fan of the likes of 'The Matrix' movies or especially the Netflix 'Altered Carbon' TV series.
My only reservation is that it's not suitable for a younger audience (unless your standards are considerably lower than mine). The game features some graphic sexual content at one point, which is completely unavoidable (it's even part of the puzzles). There's also a notable use of the 'F-word' throughout the game. Although the game has a few easter eggs referencing classic games from the 90s, this is certainly geared toward a much more mature audience. Unlike, say, 'The Secret of Monkey Island', I would *never* play 'Virtuaverse' around my kids!
Overall this game was an amazing experience for me and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes cyberpunk and is nostalgic for the LucasArts 'golden age' of classic adventure games.
The only thing for me is the ending. I was like a "Whaaaaat?". Guys, you'd better hold a sci-fi setting till the end.
Despiting of it, I highly recommend this game to everyone who fond of cyberpunk settings. This one is really decent!
