Playing the STORY MODE would be a great option for all those people that don't want to deal with hardcore puzzles. You won't miss much of the story but at the same time most of puzzles will be easier, require less conditions to be unlocked and you will deal with much less inventory objects. Some passages have been cut but the big part of the game is still there. If you are among those who gave up because the game felt too difficult this is also a good opportunity to give it a try again. Also you can still try the old school mode again once you have completed the story mode.
In a future not too far away, one Artificial Intelligence has prevailed over all other AIs and their governments. Society has migrated to a permanently integrated reality connected to a single neural network that continuously optimizes people's experiences by processing personal data.
Nathan, an outsider still refusing to comply with the new system, makes a living off the grid as a smuggler of modded hardware and cracked software. Geared with his custom headset, he is among the few that can still switch AVR off and see reality for what truly is.
He shares an apartment in the city with his girlfriend Jay, a talented AVR graffiti writer whose drones have been bit-spraying techno-color all over the augmented space in the city.
Waking up one morning, Nathan discovers that Jay disappeared overnight, but not before leaving a cryptic message on their bathroom mirror.
Having accidentally broken his custom headset, Nathan is now disconnected and determined to find out what happened to Jay, but he soon finds himself tangled up in an unexpected journey involving Jay's hacker group and a guild of AVR technomancers.
Travelling around the world, he'll have to deal with hardware graveyards, digital archeology, tribes of cryptoshamans, and virtual reality debauchery.

Great Art, Setting and Soundtrack. The puzzles are very engaging and can stump you for a bit, but I wouldn't call them exactly hard. As an avid lover of point and click, I can wholeheartedly recommend this game, it is really excellent.
Not a huge adventure gamer, but as a huge MBR fan I picked up the game. The cyber punk vibe is very well done, with the graphics and music in perfect sync. The puzzles are better than previous adventure games I have played and fit the style of the game well, if you are familure with old school hacker culture. (ever order a pizza as a prank?)
Check it out if you are into cyberpunk or the whole synth wave style.
have a FAQ handy if you plan in old school mode. It's got some moon logic puzzles for sure. Enjoyed it, mostly. Art amd music was fun. Some cute easter eggs. One of the few games this year I actually finished (and I have raging ADHD).
The story is intriguing although the characters aren't very relatable.
I'm a software engineer and this is one of the few sci-fi stories that actually makes sense. There are a lot of references to real stuff (at some point they launch a missile that's called BEAST: they're launching a BEAST attack! :D).
It's not just a guy going wild with his imagination without any base knowledge about technology whatsoever (looking at you, George Lucas :P) and I really appreciate it.
The pixel art is spot on. Not necessarily the most gorgeous, but back in the '90s they weren't much better and I'd say it's done on purpose (plus point for truthfulness). The colors, by the way, are amazing and really contribute to the setting.
The interface is a bit clunky, but again it could be seen as a conscious choice on the retro verve.
The puzzles are quite challenging, with many red herrings and intermissions that prevents you from brute-force them. Overall they're well designed, although sometimes you have to do things in a specific order or it won't work, leading you to think you're on the wrong path even if it's not the case.
I didn't fell in love with it like I did for instance with Primordia, but I can't say it's a worse game either. It's a solid game, if you liked Beneath a Steel Sky and want more of it, this is definitely for you.
