Story of a Vampire Detective, Not BL 2
I’ve been waiting for this game for years, hoping to relive the atmosphere and RPG depth of the original *Bloodlines* (2004). Sadly, despite its name, this isn’t *Bloodlines 2* at all. The 2004 game captured the true spirit of Vampire: The Masquerade — meaningful choices, role-playing freedom, and a sense that every action shaped your character. Here, that soul is gone. Experience points only unlock vampire powers, not your character’s growth as a whole, and the role-playing elements have been reduced to a minimum. I honestly don’t know what part White Wolf played in this, or if they ever supervised The Chinese Room during development, because the result feels completely disconnected from the original and from the tabletop roots that defined the saga. As an action game, it works, but the combat feels a bit chaotic, and there are very few melee attack combinations. The atmosphere is good, and the story has some interesting moments, but it’s not enough to capture the depth of the original. This should have been released under a different title, maybe “The Story of a Vampire Detective named Phyre, Nomad, or Fabien” — any name would’ve worked, just not *Bloodlines 2*. It’s not a bad game, but it’s not the one fans have been waiting twenty years for.
