You play as Jesse Fox who finds himself imprisoned in a covert military base where he was arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Jesse must now escape using his dry wits, quick words, improvised skills, arsenal of warfare, violent explosives, MacGuyvered gadgets, and an elaborate explanation of how it all went down. If that all fails, he'll use his fists.
Uncover a clandestine plot as you escape from an enemy base where you were imprisoned for a crime you didn't commit.
Modern gameplay mechanics that pay homage to a solid classic.
Gain experience and skills by utilizing stealth to take down your enemies.
Deceive, adapt, and do whatever is necessary to escape… even if you have to impersonate a cat.
Enjoy the thrill of interrogation as you elaborate specifics of your great escape to a lieutenant who seeks to scrutinize Jesse's every word in an intricate report.
Decipher a plethora of satirical culture, gaming and movie references. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll fall in love with them.
Collect an arsenal of classic gear, things that go "pew-pew", maybe a thing or two that goes "BOOM!", and some things that go "BOING!", and definitely a thing that goes "SCRATCH".
I enjoyed from the beginning to the end. Unmetal is a great game that combines action and stealth based on Metal Gear. It has references to 80's films and TV series like Rambo and the A-Team. The humor is hilarious. I haven't laughed with a game so much for a long time.
Don't let anyone tell you the ending.
‘UnMetal’ may be a parody of Konami’s first ‘Metal Gear’ game, but it’s an excellent stealth action title on its own. The gameplay mechanics are tight and varied, with every level introducing a new challenge or tool; the pixel art graphics are superbly done and colourful; the English voice acting is spot-on; and puzzles are well integrated into the stealth action.
Best of all, the story is captivating, absurdly funny, and full of surprises. Developer Franciso Tellez de Meneses has fantastic comedic timing, which is not easy to implement in a video game. Just because it’s a parody, however, the game isn’t easy. In fact, ‘UnMetal’ is delightfully challenging. I started the game at Hard difficulty level, only to be humbled during the first boss fight. Even Normal difficulty level proved too much when fighting the second boss. I eventually finished this game at Easy difficulty level, which still offered sufficient challenge.
Despite all my praise for this game, I did find it a bit annoying that some puzzles require sheer trial and error to solve. This means resuming at the most recent save point, which may be some distance away from where you failed. Plus, the game doesn’t hit its full stride until Chapter 3. At 10 chapters long, it’s not so bad, but I did wish it’d become more familiar earlier.
When I started ‘UnMetal’, I didn’t expect it to become one of my favourite games, but it did. I loved its solid stealth gameplay, humour, and surprises. This is a game that I find very easy to recommend, especially to anyone who enjoys stealth action games, and appreciates satirical and ironic humour.
Fun game by the creator of unepic that has a lot of his fingerprints.
The humor is still there and amped up a notch. Unepic made me smile, this game made me laugh.
The story is slightly less involved than Unepic (the equivalent of the relationship between the protagonist and his possessing shadow can't be found here), but it expands in other interesting ways. It has a stronger D&D feel to it as everything feels colored by the protagonist's recounting of events with the occasional backtracking and correction of the narrative as well as the player influencing some minor details of the narrative a lot like dungeon master would in a roleplaying game session.
This also leaves player wondering what is real and imagined over the course of the game (although a lot of the events are so far-fetched that you'll probably strongly lean toward the later assumption).
The combat and stealth elements from the original Metal Gear game can be found here, but with a more modern touch. The gameplay is more fluid here and made accessible for a modern audience.
Like Unepic, there are also a lot of scripted events with accompanying special game mechanics, but there are also segments (usually when you are in a vehicle) that are a completely different game, all of which helps keep what might otherwise be a slightly repetitive experience fresh and interesting.
And of course, much like Unepic, the requisite boss battles are all very unique and a blast to figure out.
Overall, a very nice game to play that will have a lot of familiar elements by those who played Unepic, but also a lot of nice surprises in a completely new setting.
Note: I have played it on Steam but wanted to leave a review here for this little gem.
This game is sometimes compared as a combination of "Metal Gear Solid" and "Hot Shots". It is true.
Sure this game is not the most beautiful one, but it redeems a lot with the fun gameplay and even better dialogues executed with brilliant voice acting.
This game is played through in about 8-9 hours and I enjoyed every single second of it.
The boss fights can be tricky so if you only want to enjoy the completely ironical persiflage of 80's military movies (from said Hot Shots to Full Metal Jacket) you should play it on easy mode.
Take your time, let guards talk while you explore the levels. This game really shines on this.
If you can live with pixel art and want some entertaining hours, this game will be for you. I would even say it is better than Unepic, which was fun already but not so much of a parody as this one.
Give it a try!
The idea for this game grabbed me with its originality. Truly I have never seen such approach to story in any other game before. Very well executed, very funny with solid graphics and gameplay. I cant say anything bad about this game - I like everything about it.
