This game is excellent, I love the humorous story. I like the gameplay because It have a good timing and I never felt that the game lack rhythm, but it has a simple gameplay mechanics.
If you like a simple game with a good story and not very dificult. Buy this game.
I almost regret typing this review, because it might raise expectations too high, but I had such a great time with UnMetal that I feel compelled to gush about it.
It is clearly strongly inspired by the Metal Gear series, but somehow manages to not feel too derivative and have its own identity: it's more of a pastiche or an affectionate tribute than a parody... which does not make it any less hilarious! In fact, I think no other game before had managed to make me laugh so consistently! The plot and storytelling are surprisingly good too: it is framed as told by an unreliable narrator, whose shoddy recollection of events affect the gameplay and level design in really clever, almost experimental ways!
The game constantly surprised me with the strange turns it took. In typical Metal Gear fashion, it has a great sense of detail and is fully committed to its weirdness, and small interactions with items and the environment often result in unexpected (but somewhat logical) outcomes. It is also not just a succession of jokes, but a fully realized stealth adventure, which constantly renews itself thanks to solid mechanics and really cool level design that regularly brings new things on the table. Some parts, like the boss fights, are particularly well-designed and challenging. Hell, it even has a leveling system, it did not have to try this hard!
I have some nitpicks though. You tend to take heavy damage from everything, the healing mechanic is kind of weird, and the controls can be clunky: I often felt that the margin of error during combat was too thin – but that's probably just me needing to "git gud". More aggravating: I found the maze section at the end of the game to be obnoxious and poorly designed.
In short: yeah, you should pick UnMetal up. It is insanely fun, extremely funny, and it should be noted that it is miraculously well-optimized and runs fine on my ages-old, low-end laptop. I don't think it made much of a splash when it was released, which is a shame...
I don't normally write reviews, but as this is an indie game which I feel didn't get the recognition it absolutely deserves, I figured I should write something.
At its heart, UnMetal is, obviously, a parody of the Metal Gear series. This means that the basic gameplay loop consists in traversing spaces while avoiding and suppressing guards. The way progression works, however, can be compared to that of adventure games: you find an obstacle and you come up with a solution from your inventory, which often requires you to combine the objects that you have. In addition to this, the devs clearly had fun mixing up this formula with other concepts, often departing very much from the basic gameplay, but always in a fun and clever way.
Of course, being a parody, it's also very funny. The humour often stems from the fact that Jesse is an unreliable narrator, which often allows the jokes to weave into gameplay in clever, unexpected (and hilarious) ways. The general silliness however never gets out of hand, and the story is actually quite gripping.
Graphically, the game is absolutely gorgeous. The environments, the characters, the cutscenes always look wonderful, and the amount of animations (and their quality) is honestly breathtaking. Seriously, it's among the best examples of 2D art I've ever seen. It's especially crazy considering how small the dev team is.
The soundtrack is excellent, and sound effects are good as well. Unfortunately, the English voiceover isn't always as good as the rest of the components. As a side complaint, I should note that it looks like sometimes the devs forgot to implement Playstation button prompts and the game reverts to Xbox buttons.
All in all, UnMetal is a wonderful game. It's funny, it's a good stealth game, and it's a technical feat. Absolutely recommended.
So, I finished this game the first time now. I believe I may beat the game again.
The graphics are 2D-Top-Down only. Very oldschool. No unnecessary effects or issues detected. It is a pixel-game and it does it well.
The game itself has a lot of things which are reminescent to other games as well. But this game... It has its own humor. And this humor is hilarious. If you want to get hooked, get into this story, as it will get more and more fun.
Some bosses are really challenging, but if you work hard enough, you will beat them.
I had a lot of fun going through this game. Don't fix what's not broken. I definitely recommend it!
