While taking a break from playing a tabletop RPG, Daniel, an average guy from modern times, is transported to Harnakon’s Castle. Thinking that he is suffering from a hallucination, he decides that he is going to run the adventure for as long as the illusion lasts. I'm having a blast playing this game, for a lot of reasons. But I just can't get past the HORRENDOUS dialogue and constant incorrect spelling of words. I understand the game has been translated, but surely the creator could have found someone to do a better job with the translation. Other than that, this game is AWESOME.
This game is must play if you like old school gems like Maze of Galious.
In fact this game I believe was highly inspired by MoG.
It is often brutal like most 'old schools', but very rewarding and a good fun.
Pity it is finished now.
If you going to play it then prepare to die... a lot. :)
I really enjoyed this game. The controls were more than satisfactory, the character customization was varied enough to allow many ways to play through the game, and the bosses were enjoyable and required thought to find an ideal approach to defeating them. The only things that I could think of to improve this game would be a bit less over-the-top immaturity in the humor, and more subtlety in the references. I definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes platformers and/or role playing games, and I'm hoping that the developer releases something new sometime soon.
Others have described this game in more detail (with frequent abuse of the oxymoronic word "metroidvania"), with it's great gameplay, multiple upgrade systems, variety of weapons, magic, and (often adult) humour, it's a must-buy (seriously, if you like 2-D Metroid-like games, buy this now), but there are two negatives other reviews frequently overlook.
The first annoyance is the time it takes to travel back to tough boss rooms when you die, because you respawn in the centre of the map when you die. This can become annoying the third, seventh, umpteenth, etc. time you die trying to kill a boss; but that's an old-school game mechanic which isn't unreasonable in a game like this so it can be forgiven.
The second negative is a bit more tiresome, however. Before you travel back to said room with the boss that just killed you, you will need to grind and grind and grind for Kill Points to activate weapon skills to have any kind of chance to kill said boss if you're character build (yes, you get to choose your gameplay style -- buy this game!) uses weapons rather than spells. Having to do that umpteen times is the opposite of fun. Worse, it's not only after you die, but even when you simply save and quit. Games should not punish you for having to eat, sleep, or go to work. If you have amazing reflexes you might not need maxed-out weapon skills, but I think typical players with average skills will (I certainly do), and that turns enjoyment into a boring chore very quickly.
Despite my gripe about grinding, the game easily still deserves four stars and ranks right up there with all-time favourites like Metroid and Mega Man.
I'm enjoying this game like I haven't enjoyed games for a while. A refreshing take on dungeon crawler and RPG.
And by the way, reference jokes aren't bad at all. Already a few made me smile. OK, you're not going to ROFL, but for that better listen stand up comedy. This is a game and makes really well.
