Description
In UNDERTALE you play as a human child who falls underground into the world of monsters. Now you must find your way out... or stay trapped forever.

Welcome to UNDERTALE, an RPG game where you don't have to kill anyone. Each enemy can be "defeated" nonviolently. Dance with a slime. Pet a dog. Whisper your favorite secret to a knight.
Or, ignore this choice and rain destruction upon your foes.
But your journey will take determination. Each adversary has unique bullet patterns that you must dodge as well (don't worry, it's not that hard).
  • Killing is unnecessary: negotiate out of danger using the unique battle system.
  • Time your attacks for extra damage, then dodge enemy attacks in a style reminiscent of top-down shooters.
  • Soulful, character-rich story with an emphasis on humor.
  • Created mostly by one person.
  • Become friends with all of the bosses!
  • At least 5 dogs.

It's very...odd.

This review has no spoilers because I like you people. First of all, if you are thinking of getting Undertale or are playing it, do not watch any videos, read any wikis or visit any fansites until you have all three (alright, maybe two) main endings complete, or you will get spoiled, and story is the main reason you're here. Undertale is a showcasing of the problem with YouTube gamers promoting indie games: they will spoil the game. This game is thoroughly unique. This is not one you get for gameplay, as it's honestly not the best in this game. But it is unforgettable, from the music, to the characters, to the story, to the boss fights. All of the fights that could be considered 'final boss' are great, among the likes of Giygas and Lavos' battles. I am dead serious. This game isn't hard with the exception of two fights, and it's also quite short, with each playthrough being 4-6 hours, and once you have all, or at least two, of the main endings done, you'll probably have 20 or so hours under your belt. Yes, this game has multiple endings! If this is your first time playing, do not let anybody suggest a 'route' for you to take: choose for yourself. People don't seem to realise that telling you how to play the game to get the best ending is in itself a spoiler. The game gives you tips on how to get a good ending itself, so take those. And that leads me to another unique part about this game. This game basically has no fourth wall. You, the real life person playing, are a character in the story, separate from the protagonist you control. This game subverts many game tropes, from EXP to character naming to saving the game to tutorials, and these twists range from hilarious to terrifying. This game will make you laugh or scare you shitless, no matter what ending you get. Finally, please ignore the fanbase. It's a single player game, it's not hard. I hate it too.

Best Game I've ever played

What makes Undertale good is not any particular "part" of it. As such, if the music is too loud or too much, please adjust your volume outside of the game, do not turn the sound off. If you do you'll be missing a LOT this game has to offer. And the music at the start of the game is nothing compared to the sorts of sounds you'll encounter towards the end. Without giving anything away the jRPG bullet hell "with choices" is only a cover. As it is the individual parts of the game are mediocore, however they come together to . . . Deliver an experience. Honestly until I beat the game it was a 4 star game. However, the "complete" story has me coming back to this title, time and time again. Reviewing wiki articles, listening to the music, and thinking about the characters (who are fascinating from a literary perspective). I stopped gaming for about a month after beating this game because of that "Whoa . . ." moment. I've listened to Bergentrucken a million times now (and read up a bit on it), along with almost every single boss song. And listening to those songs has brought realizations regarding the story. Yep, it is *that* kind of game. This game has stuck with me, haunted me. To put it bluntly what people love about this game is not the "choices," so much as it is the whole package. The individual elements come together to communicate things that would be hard to communicate otherwise, and to make a unique experience. The mercy options give us additional information regarding the characters inhabiting this world. Boss attacks and the music along with tell us so much more about them. Even the most basic of things will take on additional meaning or be used in events. As it is, unless you're a total sucker for the feels the first 2 hours of the game won't be impressive to you. What is after that is the best bit of game design I've ever come across. This is the epitome of gaming and what it should be, from my perspective (holistic over parts, story matters most).

Almost the best game ever

Some have called this game the best game ever. They're wrong, but it's easy to see how they made that mistake. After all, in terms of rewarding player choice with meaningful consequences, Undertale is indeed better than the Bioshock franchise, the Mass Effect franchise, TellTale's Walking Dead franchise, Spec Ops: The Line, and many others. Undertale's gameplay seems to be a combination of a straightforward JRPG and an even more straightforward bullet-hell minigame. But it's the way that gameplay is integrated with (and determines the outcome of) the story, the world and back-story, and the characterization of the main cast, that makes Undertale an instant all-time classic. Undertale's world seems to be a linear path almost as bad as Final Fantasy XIII. But the way it's constantly entertaining the player no matter what the player is doing, and calling back to what the player has done already, makes the linear path feel like a living world actually reacting to the player's actions. This is a game where some jokes fall flat and the worst parts are merely decent, but the best parts put teams of hundreds of more experienced professionals to shame. Buy. This. Game.
