Favourite game in a long time
Undertale is a wonderful game: it's funny, ambitious, intelligent, creative - and the soundtrack is wonderful. It's my Game of the Year for 2015, and is one of the games that has impressed me most for a long time. The story follows a human child lost in an underground world of monsters. The gameplay is fantastic: it hybridises several different kinds of game play, and everything you do has a consequence. Firstly, you explore a world in a similar way to JRPGs, exploring the world and interacting with objects and characters. When you are attacked, you have the choice of attacking yourself, talking or interacting with the character, using items, or refusing to attack either by running away or just refusing to attack. After each of your turns, there is an attack - and you have the opportunity to dodge or avoid damage in an incredible variety of mini-games that fit the situation. Anyway, that's just the core framework that the game uses to tell its story, and the story is wonderful: all of the characters have an amazing life and detail to them, and you have the opportunity to learn a great deal about them. I'm going to keep returning to the story, world and characters of Undertale for years to come, and it's brought me to tears many times: sometimes because I was laughing so hard, and sometimes because it's just damn sad or touching. It's a hard game to describe, but the demo is available here: http://undertale.com/demo.htm I recommend playing the demo first: it's a less polished version of the introductory section of the game, and it can be completed in 20-30 minutes. Even with being less polished and less funny than the full game, the demo does a good job of giving you an idea of Undertale's vibe and the kind of story it's telling. I can't recommend the game highly enough.
