A little gem

Unavowed can be seen as a mix between an RPG and a classic point-and-click adventure. You get to pick your sex, background and then you are set loose in a moody New York, as you try to solve the mystery of your own demonic possession. You are recruited (right after your exorcism) in a secret society that guards the world from supernatural creatures, and your team quickly grows, as you get to pick 2 of them each time to bring with you on your investigations, each with their skills and abilities, which give the game various ways to solve the same puzzles and problems. The game looks and sounds great, and it plays smoothly as well. It has a great atmosphere, and the various cases you investigate are all small, interesting stories, and they build on the main quest very well. It's not without its flaws: I feel like the ending might be slightly disappointing in its tone, given what happens (although I feel the actual concept is very nice, I wish things went in a different direction, after becoming emotionally invested on the characters and the setting), some choices aren't really choices, and the game tends to be a tad too easy from beginning to end. Some of the characters aren't used in interesting ways (or rather, their skills aren't). This doesn't harm too much a good story, with some amazing companions and banter. Some puzzles are clever as well, and the amount of tedium is fairly low (with one exception being the prison section, although I don't know if that changes depending on your companions). I am curious to see how much different backgrounds affect the story, actually, and to explore some of the choices I didn't pick the first time around. I played this game for free as it was part of the XBOX game pass, but I liked it so much, I had to buy it here on GOG, which I think speaks volume to how much I enjoyed it.

Bravo Wadjet Eye! Fantastic!

Heavy on the story side. A little light on the puzzles. Not a bad thing at all. But you will enjoy the ride because it's a GREAT one! If you're looking for a brain-buster, Unavowed might not be what you're looking for. BUT. If you've always had an inkling that things go bump in the night. Or that there's more to our reality than meets the eye... Then Unavowed is for you. PS. ProZD (aka Soon Woon aka Sang Wing aka Sing Wan aka Soon Woo aka SANG Won aka SOOJ WIN aka SungWon Cho is in this game!) But I won't tell you where ; ) As is Pushing Up Roses! : D

A typical Wadjet Eye

I like Wadjet Eye games. I've played them for many many years and always found some charm in them even with their older Blackwell games where Dave was clearly still finding a good balance. This game is another very typical Wadjet Eye game but why only 3/5 then you might wonder? Because after 12 years, it's time they stopped making the same amateur mistakes. The others reviews will tell you about the good things: nice pixel art backdrops, well fleshed out characters, lots of dialogue, etc. etc. It's the same with all Wadjet Eye games and you'll find it here as well. But I wanted to focus on the negatives (yes boo hiss me) because I find it sad to see so little true progress in their games. For a start, the voice acting, again, is all over the place. The actors sound so disinterested and bored that it bleeds into the game. Some voices are excellent but just as many kill the scene. In the end, I turn them off because then at least I can imagine the voices the way the dialogue reflects instead of sounding like most of them are half asleep. The backdrops. This is a personal annoyance many might not share. Over the years, Wadjet Eye games received increasingly better quality backdrops but even though the quality is very high, the execution lets me down. Clearly the artist has talent but he never manages to bring the most out of the backdrops. Nearly every scene feels as if it's scaled wrong. The perspective on the first screen in front of the bar is off, the bar inside feels all wrong, rooms & areas feel cramped, ... I never really get drawn inside the world because of this and it's a damn shame considering the quality. The animation. It's still the same style as 12 years ago and it's janky as hell. People walk stiffly which keeps reminding you you're playing an indie adventure game. So yes, it's a good game as usual from Wadjet Eye - but I wish I saw more improvements over the years. Seeing them keep making the same mistakes saddens me.

A cool twist on the old formula

I've really enjoyed this and it's quite an impressive achievement to include this much variation in a point&click adventure game (although, as a consequence, most of the puzzles do feel less complex). The story is pretty cool, too, but it frequently shifts between really dark and really goofy, which... is to be expected with urban fantasy, I guess. But I like the supporting cast more than I like the overall worldbuilding. All in all, I do recommend this game, will probably replay it, and wouldn't mind a sequel or another game picking up this formula.

Great story - original setting

I really like adventure / point and click games, this one caught me off-guard. While I like Wadjet eye games as a whole, I was a bit weary of Dave Gilbert's previous games and wanted to give this one a try, while not expecting much from it. Well... the story is great, the dialogues are globally nice, each character has its own personality (sometimes poorly written) but they add up to an interesting world setting, which is then used more in depth as the story develops.
