Unavowed

Seems very good so far (about 4 hours in). while i was not caputred as much by the other adventure entries that wadjet eye merely published, i was hoping for dave gilberts latest effort to capture me like the blackwell series did over the past years. thankfully this game feels very similar to blackwell. the individual stories have captured me and i enjoy the ghostly creepy atmosphere so far. characters are likable. unlike some, i REALLY like that my own chars text is not spoken. i think it always slows games down when you read every text in your head and then have to hear it again. i enjoy the puzzle difficulty so far as well (more on the easy side). i just want to soak up the story and atmosphere, not be bogged down by hard puzzles where i constantly have to check a walkthrough. thanks wadjet for making yet another great entry in the adventure genre. my last adventure game i enjoyed this much has been thimbleweed park.

This game is a masterpiece. The story is simple enough to hold you in it’s grip and deep enough to pull you in until you can’t stop playing. The game has some unique characters with interesting backstories. And then there are choices! This adventure allows different approaches with a slightly (sometime even significantly) different outcome for your progression of the story. You can even pick one of several starting characters. So you have one more reason to play this game for a second or third run. I know I will. This is easily one of my all time favourites in 25+ years of gaming. The Dark Fantasy Theme and humour reminded me of the Harry Dresden Books. It’s just extremely well written, it’s funny and heartbreakingly sad at times. I would strongly recommend you buy this. Now.

Campy, endearing cast of characters, made me sad/shocked/happy/excited at moments. Would recommend 10/10

Unavowed can be seen as a mix between an RPG and a classic point-and-click adventure. You get to pick your sex, background and then you are set loose in a moody New York, as you try to solve the mystery of your own demonic possession. You are recruited (right after your exorcism) in a secret society that guards the world from supernatural creatures, and your team quickly grows, as you get to pick 2 of them each time to bring with you on your investigations, each with their skills and abilities, which give the game various ways to solve the same puzzles and problems. The game looks and sounds great, and it plays smoothly as well. It has a great atmosphere, and the various cases you investigate are all small, interesting stories, and they build on the main quest very well. It's not without its flaws: I feel like the ending might be slightly disappointing in its tone, given what happens (although I feel the actual concept is very nice, I wish things went in a different direction, after becoming emotionally invested on the characters and the setting), some choices aren't really choices, and the game tends to be a tad too easy from beginning to end. Some of the characters aren't used in interesting ways (or rather, their skills aren't). This doesn't harm too much a good story, with some amazing companions and banter. Some puzzles are clever as well, and the amount of tedium is fairly low (with one exception being the prison section, although I don't know if that changes depending on your companions). I am curious to see how much different backgrounds affect the story, actually, and to explore some of the choices I didn't pick the first time around. I played this game for free as it was part of the XBOX game pass, but I liked it so much, I had to buy it here on GOG, which I think speaks volume to how much I enjoyed it.

Heavy on the story side. A little light on the puzzles. Not a bad thing at all. But you will enjoy the ride because it's a GREAT one! If you're looking for a brain-buster, Unavowed might not be what you're looking for. BUT. If you've always had an inkling that things go bump in the night. Or that there's more to our reality than meets the eye... Then Unavowed is for you. PS.
